Accepted: Undecided, Dornsife College
Stats:
College transferring from: Boise State University
Entering as: Sophomore
GPA: 3.72
Units completed:57 semester credits
Units in progress: Zero. I had personal family problems and I took the Spring 2012 semester off. Explained throughly in my student correspondence and provided documents that supported my argument.
Pre-reqs completed/GEs completed: All of them except for the language requirement. I took one spanish class in high school and zero language classes in college. I speak spanish though so that could only have helped.
Subjective:
ECs listed on app: Zero.
Job/Work Experience: I have worked since I was 16.
Essays (subject and responses): My essay was crap. I personalized it for Binghamton University because I thought I was not going to not apply to USC. Stupid mistake and I ended up rushing the essay. It was ok. Not spectacular by any means. I emailed USC and stated that I was sending a different essay that did a better job of accurately portraying my writing skills. They emailed me back and stated that if I wanted to add documents to my application that I needed to email them (? didn’t I just do that?). I think they looked at my second essay because there is no way I would have received admission with that crappy first essay.
Letters of Recommendation: none
Other:
Other schools applied to: Suffolk University (Accepted), Loyola University Chicago (Accepted), Hofstra University(Accepted), Baruch College (Accepted), Binghamton University (Accepted), and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Rejected)
Comments:Shocked that I got in. I was literally preparing to go to NY and then I found out. I was ecstatic of course because USC was always my dream school. I think I got in because of my special circumstances (dropping out of high school) and my upward grade trend.

College transferring from: Diablo Valley College

Subjective:

ECs listed on app: Student Ambassador, President of Math Club, Math Tutor, Intercollegiate Swimming, School Volunteer
Job/Work Experience: None really
Essays (subject and responses): My essay was okay. Talking about why I wanted USC over any UC I applied to. Talked about how being Student Ambassador helped my views on the international community, and how it opened my eyes around my own school campus. USC was perfect, harnessing large amounts of international students.
Letters of Recommendation: One decent one from math professor about why I’m different than other applicants.
Other:
Other schools applied to: UCLA (Accepted), UCB (Rejected), UCSD (Accepted), UCSB (Accepted), UCD (Accepted), NYU (Waitlisted), Santa Clara Univ (Accepted)
Comments: To be honest pretty shocked I got in. Not hearing anything for a long time, while so many people on College Confidential were talking about how they got the enrollment box, etc. So to future applicants, don’t get discourage about what you read on this website. Remember, it’s mainly a lot of people assuming random crap and making up random stats that aren’t even true. Don’t assume anything. Cause honestly, that’s how I freaked myself out. Good luck to future applicants. Go Trojans!

Stats:

College transferring from: L.A. Community Colleges

Job/Work Experience: Tutoring math and science for two years (Private, at college, and as a volunteer in different programs), instructor of some summer classes at my college

Essays (subject and responses): About average I believe (I’m not a good writer, but tried my best) I basically wrote a summery of my life and also talked about all the factors that made USC a perfect school for me!

Letters of Recommendation: One from the chair of one of the departments at my college.

Other schools applied to: UCLA, UCB, UCSB, UCI (UCLA was the second option if I didn’t get into SC!

Comments: Well, when I applied, I was very confident like “I have the perfect package, why would a school reject me!” yet after all these days seeing people get accepted and not a small change in my status, I literally lost all my hopes and SIR’d for the second school of my choice! I know that the process is terribly stressful, but try to stay positive… Anyways, I’m very happy and excited. Fight On!

Letters of Recommendation: 1 from a Notre Dame grad!!

Other schools applied to: Cal Poly (Both), UCLA, Woodbury University, and USC
Comments: Only accepted to Woodbury and USC, I got an extremely lucky break in my opinion. I bombed my 1st semester of college with a 2.7 GPA, then got near straight A’s to bring my application cumulative GPA above 3.6.

Accepted - School of Architecture/B. Arch

Stats:

[ul]
[] College transferring from: San Joaquin Delta College (CCC)
[] Entering as: Junior
[] GPA: 3.825 (3.7~3.75 after spring semester)
[] Units completed: 34 Units (Note I took full loads for my Fall2011/12, and Spring 2011 Semesters; however because some classes don’t transfer, I decided not to include them)
[] Units in progress: 21 Units (This Spring semester almost killed me; Arch, Bio, and Physics which were in conjunction with 3 hour studio/labs, and Calculus, Religion, and Political Science.)
[] Pre-reqs completed: All Completed

[] Job/Work Experience: N/A, however I did talk about my volunteer experience as a Cabin Leader for 5th Graders at Science Camp; I explained how daunting the task seemed but how I was also able to overcome those fears and develop leadership and guidance skills.
[] Essays (subject and responses): I honestly do not know! D: Lol I felt like my essay was average; However, I did mention a few things about migrating from Philippines, to Italy to America, and my family’s hope for better opportunities. I also talked about the diversity of living in the city I currently live and how in the process I was able to learn about different cultures (Ex. Joining Hmong Club at School even though I’m not Hmong :P)
[] Letters of Recommendation: one from my counselor, one from my Calculus teacher, and one from my Architecture teacher who also works at a Large firm here. Can’t say much about the quality of those letters of recommendations since I have nothing to compare them with, but I wouldn’t say they were stellar. Lol
[] Hook: I wanted to add this category but I think a few hooks possibly served to my advantage through admissions. First, I’m a first generation college student. Second, I’ve made a drastic improvement from my High School Grades (2.05 in HS to 3.8 in College). And Possibly third, migrating from Rome Italy and having some fluency in Italian :D
[/ul]Other:

[ul]
[] Other schools applied to: Cal Poly SLO, Cal Poly Pomona
[] Comments: ■■■■… I GOT IN. I honestly didn’t see myself writing in this topic with an “accepted” in big green letters right above my post!!! Admissions is so unpredictable and it’s an unforgiving roller coaster!!! With that being said, DON’T EVER LOSE HOPE; EVEN IF IT’S THE LAST DAY THEY SEND OUT DECISIONS, because frankly, you may surprised by a large white envelope stating you’ve been admitted. With the recent switch to Common App, I imagine future decisions are gonna be just as chaotic so just enjoy the ride and keep pushing for an acceptance!!

As far other schools, I didn’t care for SLO (got denied). I hear SLO takes a really technical rather than design-intensive approach to architecture (and I don’t like that lol. I enjoy expressing my creativity). , and I SERIOUSLY thought I was going to attend Pomona (Which I was definitely happy with as well) I’ve heard excellent things about the architecture program there; its not surprise that it’s Pomona’s crown jewel  The decision of going to Pomona or USC was definitely a difficult one to make, but at the end, I just couldn’t pass up on the location, beauty, and community of USC!!

Yowza, I wrote a lot lol. Well it’s nice to finally be part of the Trojan Family; FIGHT ON!!

[] ECs listed on app: A lot! Super involved in high school and in my college freshmen year. Did some big youth programs outside of school. But most of my film ECs are within school.
[] Essays (subject and responses): I tried to present my diverse background in my essays, how I’ve lived across continents since a young age and how I want to incorporate my unique background into my films.
[] Letters of Recommendation: one from a college professor of my film critique class, one from a industry professional, and one from my high school counselor (for academic reference). The first two letters are very strong.
[/ul]Other:

[ul]
[] Other schools applied to: NYU (Waitlisted), Vanderbilt (Waitlisted), Michigan (Rejected)
[li] Comments: People are probably shocked right now, seeing my low GPA along with my big bold green “accepted”. I was very shocked when I received my acceptance as well. I NEVER thought I would get in (esp without even a SGR as a freshman applicant!) I did not think I was exceptional enough for SCA.[/li]That is why I think SCA really focuses on looking for potential filmmakers than just little steven spielbergs. After getting rejected as a high school senior, and rejected again after I appealed my decision, the third time I applied as a transfer I decided to be very genuine in my essays and showed them who I really am, and they liked who I am - this, I think, is the real reason why I am accepted. I have wanted to go there since the age of 15. And I did not stop trying. If you are rejected you should not stop trying either! Good luck to y’all.

UC tuition continues to go up. And lastly, how I long for the spirit and urban setting of USC.
