Spring Grade Request - Viterbi/Computer Science
**Decision Date & Time: 04/07/14 **

Stats:

  • [] College transferring from: Stony Brook University
    [] Entering as: Sophomore
[] GPA: 3.59 (First term), 3.85 (Second Term)
    [] SAT: 2140 Math: 770 Reading: 650 Writing: 720

Subjective:

  • [] Extracurriculars: Quite a few CS projects
[] Letters of Rec: Probably not the strongest.
    [] Solid essays

Other:

[ul]
[] Other schools applied to: NYU (Accepted), Cornell (rejected), UPenn (rejected), Stanford (rejected), Carnegie Mellon(rejected), Wash U (rejected), Rice U (Rejected), Still waiting on Northwestern and Notre Dame
[li] Comments: USC was my top choice from the start. I am extraordinarily happy about this. My acceptance is a conditional one, but I meet all of the conditions. I think they accepted me before looking at my spring grades even though they asked for my spring grades. I get that impression because of the conditions of acceptance are about my second term grades.[/li][/ul]

Why didn’t I see this thread before?!

Spring Grade Request - Dornsife/International Relations
Decision Date & Time: April 24

Stats:

[ul]
[] College transferring from: California CC
[] Entering as: Junior
[] GPA: 2.9 (I KNOW. I KNOW.)
[] Units completed: wayyyy too many to count
[] Units in progress: 28
[] Pre-reqs completed: All
[] GEs completed: All
[/ul]Subjective:

[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: Community Service organizations,
[] Job/Work Experience: Random jobs here/there
[] Essays (subject and responses): I think this was the strongest and best part of my application. I literally went over my essays again and again. My main essay was super personal and I think it really explained my grade situation without being cliche or a sob story. The supplements were a lot of fun for me and I just had fun with them.
[] Letters of Recommendation: Very strong. Written by two of my favorite professors. One of them is a USC alum.
[/ul]Other:

[ul]
[] Other schools applied to: Cal States, UCs, Privates. Rejected by almost every single school so far.
[li] Comments: I was literally shocked when I didn’t get a flat out rejection by USC. I keep looking at the letter on USC stationary they sent me because it seems like some kind of mistake. I know it’s not an acceptance, but it’s a rejection either, right? I spent a lot of my time in the beginning of my time in community college wasting time and ditching class, and my grades have recently begun to take an upward trend so I’m glad they can see that. Thank you USC for actually looking over my whole application, not just my grades. [/li][/ul]

Annenburg Journalism/2nd choice psych
Decision Date & Time: 5/31 midnight

Stats:
College transferring from: University of Miami
Entering as: Junior
GPA: 3.4 (3.5 after spring, but I didn’t get an SGR)
Units completed: 67
Units in progress: 0
Pre-reqs completed: ?
GEs completed: most

Comments: Apparently being on Provost’s list at another top Comm school isn’t good enough for Annenburg. I would have been better off applying from a community college. I also had a 2160 SAT and 200 hours of volunteer work in the past 2 years. Is it even worth it to try and appeal?

Letters of Recommendation: Excellent recommendations for 3 professors.

Other schools applied to: N/A

Comments: I’m ecstatic for having the chance to transfer to USC in one year. The best advice I would give would be to work at getting as many of the GE categories completed as possible. I attended one of the transfer sessions and was told that the most important thing was GPA. I did 46 units in 2 semesters so definitely try to get as many units done as possible! GLAD TO BE A TROJAN, FIGHT ON!

[] College transferring from: Hawaii Pacific University
[] Entering as: Freshmen?
[] GPA: 3.4
[] Units completed: 63 (total, including spring 2014) I think only 54 transferred
[] Units in progress: 14 in spring 2014
[] Pre-reqs completed: Math, Writing, Diversity, Need one more foreign language class
[] GEs completed: 2 out of 3 available at my university (the third could of been the scientific class one)
[/ul]Subjective:

[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: Volunteer work at a hospital and hospice, Shadowed a cardiologist and many M.D.'s, went on walks for diabetes, heart, ect. President of Health organization, hosted fundraisers especially for the earthquake in Haiti and raised a bunch of money. Competed in the health competition for CPR/First Aid and made it to state.
[] Job/Work Experience: I worked 4 consecutive jobs in high school. Life guarding during the following jobs. Serving, catering, and delivery driver at a Italian restaurant. Selling kid shoes at Journeys Kidz for a while. Went to college for the first year and came back for the summer and worked at Hewlett Packard and built servers for major websites and cellphone companies (AOL, Yahoo, Verizon, ect)
[] Essays (subject and responses): It would be too much to explain but I simply told them who I was, what i did, what i wanted to do, what I was passionate about and how I wanted to incorporate that in to the school. I also explained hardships along the way as well. My common app essay was USC specific, so i can be the one to debunk that theory of it having to be a general essay.
[] Letters of Recommendation: Just one from my writing/philosophy professor. I didn’t read it but we definitely had a connection that may have been presented in the recommendation.
[/ul]Other:

[ul]
[] Other schools applied to: UT (accepted), Baylor (Accepted), UofH (Accepted)
[li] Comments:I will definitely be attending! I am a spring admit btw. I am so happy for all the hard work paying off! I am a legacy (my sister literally just gradated 2 weeks ago from USC, but she is the only one that went there). In my first year, I took 2 classes over the winter (so they probably saw me working hard over the whole year without a break and making great grades). The low GPA is from one D that i got in Classical music that transferred (yeah, i know… stupid). However, I got mostly As and a few Bs in the classes that mattered. I hope the best for you all! Good luck, and FIGHT ON!!![/li][/ul]

[] Letters of Recommendation: One from my favorite teacher, apparently it was excellent
[/ul]Other:

[ul]

Spring Grade Request - Dornsife - Philosophy, Politics, and Law

Decision Date & Time: Accepted 05-30-14 / Spring Grade Request 05-13-14

Stats:
-College transferring from: University of Nevada, Las Vegas
-Entering as: Junior (Hopefully)
-GPA: 3.5
-Units completed: 65
-Units in progress: 0
-Pre-reqs completed: All for 2nd choice major (Political Science), but none for 1st choice major (PPL)
-GEs completed: All

Subjective:
-ECs listed on app: 9 in total. Most impressive was being chosen, along with 29 others, by the DNC over 500 others to participate in their exclusive HOPE Institute fellowship.
-Job/Work Experience: McDonalds, Car salesman, Volunteer and Field Organizer for Obama’s re-election campaign, Retail Associate, Intern for Congressman, Regional Field Director for non-profit, Tutor for America Reads-Counts.
-Essays (subject and responses): Intro was my life story in a nutshell, wanted to give them an idea of who i am and where i come from (son of immigrants). The rest of the Common App essay was a discussion of my accomplishments made thus far as well as how much i wanted to challenge myself academically, in other words how much i wasn’t satisfied and how i still had a lot more potential in me.
-Letters of Recommendation: 1 from community college political science professor, 1 from UNLV political science professor (who graduated from UCLA lol) and 1 from a USC Alumus who is semi-big in Nevada Politics, but who is going to blow it up big in the next few years!

Other:
-Other schools applied to: 6 others, but USC has been my first choice for the past 2 years. Applied to others at the suggestion of my UNLV professor who thought i’d fit in at other schools.
-Comments: If you are reading this you are at least thinking about applying to USC and if you are anything like me you might be discouraged to apply (had a low college gpa of 3.1 before i decided to turn my life around), but DON’T EVER GIVE UP! I put my mind to it, put in work in the classroom, put in work outside of the classroom to make me a more competitive applicant, and look at that hard work pays off! Accomplishing this dream after 2 years of hard work was worth every second of my time. If you really do want to attend USC, don’t let anything stop you, i promise you USC will not let you down if you let your personality shine through your application, good luck! #FightOn

[li] Comments: I am so relieved and happy to get in. It was an incredibly difficult process to transfer from a UC to USC, but I did not want to waste my hard work from high school and ignore a great UC like Davis. Working with a Articulation History instead of an Articulation Agreement was tough, but it was all worth it! In short, it feels incredible to get into my dream school, and I will certainly be attending. In terms of advice, I believe the honest keys to success are obtaining a great GPA and doing well in USC Core GE classes. I really think those are the main components of gaining admission. Fight on![/li][/ul]
