Question: It would seem counterproductive to send out SGRs to people that USC would reject right? I mean, I got a SGR in the beginning of May and just submitted my transcripts last week, and I was certain I would’ve been rejected last month because my essay really sucked, but I guess not? I ended my freshman year with a 3.92, and took 20 units (6 classes) my spring semester. So in all likelihood, wouldn’t they have rejected me in the first place rather than send me a SGR if they didn’t want me?

] Comments: If you make an application that genuinely sets you apart you will have a chance. Had around a 3.0 high school GPA and 1910 SAT.

@WhitneyJoy There are multiple reasons why you would get a SGR and no one except the admission counselors know exactly why. But many applicants have speculated over the years. I’m assuming that you’ll be entering as a sophomore if you’re offered admission? That doesn’t give USC a lot of information to base their decision on, hence the SGR. Also, did you take any GEs or major prep courses during the Spring? If so, that’s another reason why they may have SGR’d you. Keep in mind that while SGRs aren’t as heartbreaking as rejections, they don’t indicate an acceptance either. Some people on this forum have been rejected after an SGR. So basically, it’s not bad & it’s not good. It’s simply a request for more information (think winter grade request).

On a side note, USC is known to use a holistic review while looking at applications so a “sucky” essay wouldn’t automatically call for a rejection. A 3.92 GPA is pretty high! I applied with a 3.2 (haha). Anyways, hope this helped and good luck to you!

@woahwhat yeah thanks for your message! Actually was accepted yesterday!

Subjective:

  • [] ECs listed on app: Volunteer at LAC+USC Medical Center and had my own little business in which I would get clients from this volunteer job for a computer repair gig I did at home.
    [
] Job/Work Experience: None aside from my little “freelance” computer tech business.
[] Essays (subject and responses): 9.3/10? I talked about how I failed to transfer last year and how people from East LA don’t really value education all that much - that it’s not really a priority for the majority of people in my age/neighborhood.
    [
] Letters of Recommendation: 1 from my linguistic anthropology professor, but according to the Common App, she never sent it in.

Other:

  • [] Other schools applied to: UCLA (accepted), UCSD (accepted), and CSULB (accepted)
    [
] Comments: It was tough to apply again. I was really crushed about not getting in last year. I guess they really do admire people that have the guts to try again. I really am disappointed that I got in for spring as it wasn’t really my fault - I didn’t even get an SGR, so they just got to my application late. USC really is my dream school, but I just don’t know if I can wait until the spring - I want to start as soon as I can. I’m grateful to know that they did want me this time though. Hopefully I can somehow get in for fall. If not, I guess I’m headed off to UCLA (and I really don’t want to go there) :stuck_out_tongue:
