USC Transfer Questions: Not answered in Fall 08 Thread

I'm sure plenty of people will flame me for creating anther thread regarding USC transfer but it was necessary.

I don't know ANY of the things people are talking about in there. I read all the posts and got very little out of it because it seemed everyone there was at a Cali school.

I'm a Freshman at Emerson College, a liberal arts school, majoring in Film production. I NEED to get into USC. I will be applying as a junior transfer (which means I will be starting my junior year of college at USC?).

I was looking at the USC School of Cinematic Arts page and it said
The School of Cinematic Arts does not accept courses taken in film and/or television production at other institutions to fulfill degree and minor requirements. Basic film or television history courses can sometimes be accepted for transfer credit.

No transfer credit will be accepted in lieu of CTPR 241, CTPR 242, CTPR 290, CTPR 310, CTPR 376, CTPR 507 and CTPR 508 and any advanced production courses.
So basically 2 years of school at Emerson College and $80,000 is for nothing besides one or two classes?

The major I'm applying for is Film and Television Production at SCA (school of cinematic arts). and it says:
This program requires 6 courses in different categories, plus writing, foreign language and diversity requirements, which together comprise the USC Core.

Students in all programs are required to take one course that satisfies each of the following six categories.
**Foundations:
I. Western Cultures and Traditions one course
II. Global Cultures and Traditions one course
III. Scientific Inquiry one course

Case Studies:
IV. Science and Its Significance one course
V. Arts and Letters one course
VI. Social Issues one course**

Students may satisfy the requirements for Categories I, II, III or V with transfer course work completed before the student has enrolled at USC, but no transfer credit will satisfy the requirements for Categories IV or VI. The first semester of the writing requirement may also be satisfied with transfer course work, if it is completed before the student has transferred to USC. However, no transfer course work may be used to satisfy any general education requirements or the writing requirement if those courses are taken after a student has enrolled at USC.

Courses Taken on a Pass/No Pass Basis
No more than four units of credit (or one course) counting toward the general education categories may be taken on a pass/no pass basis. The writing courses cannot be taken on a pass/no pass basis.
Writing Requirement
Diversity Requirement
Foreign Language Requirement If I took Spanish II, III, IV Honors, and Hispanic History in High School am I exempt? Or is it something I must take in College?

MY first semester classes and grades are:
Class Subject Credit Grade
SO303B CULTURE AND POWER 4.00 A
VM100B HISTORY OF MEDIA ARTS I 4.00 B
VM105C INTRO TO VISUAL ARTS 4.00 A-
WP101B-7 EXPOSITORY WRITING 4.00 A-

How do I find out which are transferable credits? I asked my advisor at Emerson College and he told he doesn't know. :(
Is there someone I'm supposed to ask at USC?

If I haven't fulfilled the GE requirements where can I do it? Is it something that MUST be done at USC during the summer? Or can I do it somewhere else? Do only certain schools give these courses?
Is it easy to do accomplish?

Also I can't seem to find the PreReq's people keep talking about. Aren't PreReqs and GE the same thing?

I would like some insight because I really don't know where to start. I'm the first to go to college and my parents don't speak English so I have to do everything my self. I'm really stressed out right now trying to keep my GPA high so I can get into USC.

HELP ME PLEASE!!!

PS. If I get into USC I promise to make the world a better place with my awesome Pen Drumming Habit.

Edit-

you are expected to have at least an "A-/B+" average on transferable work.

OMG NO SLEEP FOR ME

Relax, [ although you should know that any students chances of transferring into USC's SCA are low. In fact current USC students have a hard time getting into the cinematic school if they decide they want to change their major.] Thre GE requirements are filled by classes taken at USC, or as stated above. I'm not sure what prereqs you are asking about ?The 4 courses you took should transfer. You WILL have to take a language placement test[ online] if you are accepted sometime in May or June, so don't throw away your Spanish books yet. Did you take any AP classes in HS and score 4 or 5 on the AP Test? They can satisfy some of the core classes.
I think you need to broaden the # of schools you might apply to if you want to leave your current school. Chapman, also in LA, has a well respected cinema program.

To find out which classes at Emerson College transfer to USC you should check to see if there is an articulation agreement between the two. Just go to the website USC ARR : Articulation to find out.

I believe the articulation agreements are only for Calif colleges-community or 4 year.

Yea, I checked the articulation agreements and it is only for Cali schools.

@menloparkmom don't get me wrong. I like my school. It's just that the only school worth transferring to is USC.

I already have a connection in Hollywood for internships to upcoming Blockbusters.

The only school that can outdo what I have right now is USC.

Besides, attempting to transfer to USC also means my Grades won't drop and keep me focused. Although I would REALLY like to get into USC.

Well, give it the old school try!

So does that mean I have to fulfill the GE requirements at USC?

Yes, that's what it means, unless USC grants you transfer credit for classes taken in college that they feel satisfy a GE requirement, or in HS[ some AP Classes [ science] will satisfy a GE requirement]

My son is trying to transfer from Indiana University to USC, so we visited the school last summer and talked to the group that handles this stuff.

Here's a website to start with:

https://camel.usc.edu/articagrmt/artic_hist_range.aspx

At this site (which applies to 4-year schools nationwide as well as California schools), you can find if anyone else ever transferred from Emerson to USC--and if so, which courses were accepted by USC.

Even if there is no history, that just means no one else tried it before--it doesn't mean your classes won't transfer. However, USC is real good at applying courses for elective credit and even for some of the gen ed requirments, but not very good at applying courses for credit in your major (as you can tell by what you've read already).

The best thing to do is to take all the required courses for admission--and the gen education courses they take early (I, II, III, and V), and the diversity course--and then plan to take the rest at USC if you have to. Sorry if that seems harsh--but it's the rules they apply to everyone.

My own son has taken quite a few business and statistics courses that he will have to retake at USC (if he gets in)--or else use as elective credit--but that's life, I guess. Maybe he can test out of one or two courses. It probably doesn't matter, though, since he'll still need to take 68 units to graduate--so I guess having to retake a few courses won't matter. It's probably the same for you, I presume.

Good luck.

P.S. I see the website above has a lot of info on which Emerson courses transfer to USC.

Calcruzer that site helped me TREMENDOUSLY. THANK YOU!!!

another question though

What do you mean by required for admission? I thought Gen Eds are the required classes?
Could you clarify?

Gen Eds and the Diversity course are the suggested admission courses for the school (along with the Writing course which is a mandatory requirement), but certain majors have mandatory requirements and suggested requirements of their own.

For example, my son is applying for the Marshall School of Business. For Marshall, the mandatory requirements are Calculus, and two economics courses (micro and macro). Suggested courses for Marshall are two accounting courses (financial acct and managerial acct) and a statistics course.

Your major will determine some of what are absolute "mandatory" courses versus what are "suggested" courses.

Go to the USC website for more details on this (and be sure to look up your major)

For fafsa, do we have to file 2007-2008 or 2008-2009??

File for 2008-2009.

USC Catalogue: The Schools: USC School of Cinematic Arts: Film and Television Production

Calcruzer, I checked the site but it doesn't say "pre-req" like it does in the Marshall School of business section. USC Catalogue: The Schools: USC Marshall School of Business: Undergraduate Degrees

So I'm guessing, besides the Gen Eds, there isn't anything else I need to fulfill?

BTW how many classes can you take at USC during the summer?

bump 10 char

bump 10 char

bump.

FOR THE LOVE OF JELLY AND JAM, BUMP!

bump 10 char

What was your question?

Yes, from what I see on the website, there are no required courses for Cinema TV-Film except for the General Education, Diversity, and Writing course. Also, you can't take the General Education IV and VI courses until you are at USC.

P.S. And I don't know how many summer school courses you can take at USC (sorry).
