USC Transfer Questions: Not answered in Fall 08 Thread

Have you sent in your portfolio for Cinema department?

http://cinema.usc.edu/admissions/applications/application-forms.htm

I'm applying for my junior year. I just want to attend USC for the summer.

Doryx, Do I still have to send in a portfolio?

Just for summer? What do you mean? From my understanding, everyone who applies to the Cinema department must submit a portfolio.

Oh and your spanish question, no matter how many years of spanish you take, you have to take the spanish placement test. If you pass out of Spanish 3, you fulfilled your foreign language requirement.

I'm taking Gen Eds at USC for the summer so that my Gen Ed requirements are fulfilled when I apply to USC for my junior year.

BTW, now that the spring semester is just beginning...

I currently have a GPA of 3.6 and I was wondering what a safe GPA is for USC.

I've heard, 3.8 - 4.0 but I'm hoping that's just an exaggeration.

bump 10 char

Anyone?

Also, on average, how many students are admitted to the Cinema-Television program as a transfer?

bump 10 char

bump 10 char

Bump 10 char

USC's latest transfer packet indicated that the average GPA of transfer admitees last year was 3.7 (up from 3.57 the year before).

Since the Cinema school is generally considered the toughest school to get into at USC, I'd say that 3.8 to 4.0 for a guarantee is undoubtedly very accurate (although it may even be low for Cinema!!).

P.S. Did anyone see the interview with Donald Trump the other day where he said he originally wasn't planning to go into real estate investment with his dad. He said he was originally planning to apply to USC's cinema school--but at the last second his dad made him to go to Fordham instead to major in business (his dad had sent him to a military school prior to that) and then he transferred to Wharton (Univ of Pennsylvania) after his first two years at Fordham.

I find it kind of ironic that his real estate success led to him ending up with his own TV show.

Thanks Calcruzer.

People with a lot of money can do whatever they want in the end.

I am currecntly a student At Cal State University San Marcos. My first semster GPA was a 3.4 completeing 15 transferable units, my average highschool grades were a 3.4 as well. I was wondering on what is the likelyhood or the chances of me actually being accepted to USC as a Sophmore. I declared myself as being an Open major and the Second major as being Comm. Do they favor minorities such as South Americans. And what is the process of admissions if I did not submit my application before the deadline??

I'm a month late but let me drop some of my experience in here.

I am a student at Los Angeles City College and I also want to transfer to USC Cinema. After speaking with school counselors, I realized they weren't capable of helping me. I went to the source and spoke to USC myself. They told me there is no way they can sit and help me directly. They sent me to their website and told me to take all the GENERAL REQUIREMENT classes and apply.

See, with USC Cinema, there are no undergraduate courses required. Which means there are no film courses they want you to take. So if you went to a film school and you're hoping you can transfer as a JUNIOR, it's not possible. They want you to take general requirement classes, such as English, African-American Studies/Chicano Studies, Anthropology - all that good stuff, and that's it. NO FILM COURSES ARE REQUIRED. THEY WANT YOU TO TAKE THEM AT USC.

You need at least 32 units to transfer, unless you want a BA in Production. Which means if you want to transfer to USC Cinema, all you need is 32 units of ANYTHING. As long as the units transfer, which can be found on the Articulation page. Those 32 units also need to fill the required classes, PLUS 3 years of foreign language! If you are already fluent in a foreign language, you are exempt by taking a placement test.

So, I got into contact with someone VERY helpful at USC Cinema. He gave me all the help I needed and answered 20+ e-mails within a week. This man basically put me on the right track. USC Cinema is very competitve, the average transfer GPA is 3.7. If this is the only school you're applying for, good luck. I'm sure you're aware they only accept less than 25 students for each BA program. Not to mention they only accept students in Fall.

Again, let me make this clear. All you need is 32 units. Go to the Articulation page, put in your school and see what comes out. I think there are 6 major categories. As long as you fulfill those classes, plus the foreign language, you are finished with their requirements. If you are still less than 32 units, you need to take electives, which can be ANYTHING that transfers over. Which is found on the bottom of the Articulation page. If you want to get into Production, you need 48 units. These units can be of anything, again. As long as they transfer. You also need a creative writing sample and portfolio for any program in Cinema.

I am going to apply for USC, UCLA, Chapman, and San Francisco State. Those are the schools I'm shooting for, in that order. USC is really competitive, and I don't know if my ~3.5 GPA is even good enough! Good luck to all. If you have any questions, e-mail me. I'm not an expert but I know more than these stupid college counselors. Mine are still "e-mailing" USC to find out how I can get in.

one way that was some good intel.

I didn't know that my film classes don't matter.

25 students is pretty harsh.

I emailed a USC transfer counselor and asked if I had to take all the Gen Eds before I apply. She said I didn't but it would help.
So now I don't know who to believe: you or her.
because i cannot fulfill the language requirement which is the only gen ed I cannot fulfill.

I'm in the same boat as you. There is no believing me or her, I'm no expert. You can not finish all your GE courses, but it's best you do. But you're film classes don't matter UNLESS they are transferable courses. As in, if you took a few film courses and you're hoping you won't have to retake the equivalent in the Film school, you're wrong. I'm taking 'History of the Motion Picture' now and it's a transferable course, so that's fine. But any actual film courses, USC wants you to take them at SC. It'll transfer as units if it's transferable but that's all.

As for foreign language, they told me you need 3 level's which is equivalent to 3 years or 3 semesters. I'm fluent in a foreign language so they told me I can take a test to be exempt. I still have many unanswered questions, like my main one: Will my 3.40 GPA be good enough? I don't know, probably not, considering I'll have a 3.20 when I apply. I'm worried as hell, but no one seems to be able to answer that for me.

People have been telling me that average GPA for SCA is 3.7.

You're gonna need a killer internship or creative portfolio

hi there, whcin major does director belong to?does director belong to "production"?
