USC transfers.

30 credits? what is that usually equivalent to? full freshman year? one semester? freshman and sophomore year?

[/QUOTE]

30 semester credits/units is pretty much equal to a full freshman year (15 units per semester).

Yeah that is a full freshman year. The word for word from the Transfer Guidelines is "3. It is recommended that applicants to Journalism or Public Relations have completed 30-40 transferable semester units at the time of applying." Now if you single out that last part at the time of applying means when you send ur appplication, and their deadline this year was Jan 20th. If you were a freshman applying to be a sophomore at that point the most you could have had was between 12-18 depending on your school. So that wording is kind of weird because you'd have to send ur application in before you had 30-40 completed if you applied to be a sophomore. They mean that they want you to not have more than 40 or less than 30 when u send ur app. I clarified this with the person who did the presentation because I got paranoid I would get in even though I had a pretty good GPA and most of my GEs done already but he said what they meant is how many you had when you applied not when you transfer.

anyone else hear from USC...?

still a bit confused....so they wouldn't look at me favorably if i applied for a transfer after my first semester to enter as a sophomore?

would i be able to apply after freshman year and enter as a spring sophomore?

or do you recommend that i just wait and transfer as a junior

and after checking my rejection letter it says that i would need to apply shortly after my first semester...which is kinda contradictory isn't it?

m1a2c2kali,

What rejection letter are you referring to?

If you wouldn't have gotten it with your high scool record than you don't have good chance of getting in as a transfer because if you have less than 30 credits they base most of their decision on your high school records. If you wait until after you've completed your full freshman year and are in the process of your sophomore year they don'd base their decision on your high school record at all.

"What rejection letter are you referring to?"

My regular freshman rejection letter

Trojan wannabe

thanks for the info .. if i apply after my first semester and get rejected due to my high school record and then reapply in my sophomore year would it look favorably or do they not keep a record?

TrojanWannabe...so what is you're saying is since I'll have 34 credits applying as a transfer, USC won't base my decision on my HS record AT ALL? If thats true then I'll be pretty happy

This is what they say on the website.
"There is no minimum number of transfer units you must complete before applying for admission. However, if you have completed fewer than 30 units, we will focus primarily on your high school record and results from the SAT or ACT."

If by re-apply in your sophomore year, you mean re-apply during your sophomore year to try and get in for your junior year, they won't base their decision on your high school record, so the fact that you were rejected out of HS shouldnt play any role in whether you get in or not, as long as you have done well at CC or at another 4 -year university.

ok thanks for all the help

If you have 30 semester units or above in college, high school performance is STILL being considered slightly but they focus more on your college performance. Again, they still require your official high school record.

Are u sure? I thought that after 30+ all the focus went to college level work.

well, I suppose that having ADCOMS look at my poor HS grades may be a blessing in disguise as my college gpa is more than a full grade point better than my HS grades.

Yes, if you have more than 30+ units, they will consider your college work much more than your high school record but again, your high school record still plays a role--but a VERY LITTLE role in determining whether you should get in or not.

But if you get good GPA like 3.6+ in college with more than 30 units plus having done the 2 writting courses plus as many other requirement as possible, you should be in good shape. THEY DON'T HAVE A CUT OFF GPA but THEY LOOK FOR A WELL ROUNDED STUDENT with extra activities, talents, awards, honors, interest in the major and so on...

Also note that the average admits' GPA was 3.57.

MY GPA is a bit under the average (3.44) But my GPA I do have a good number of activities, spent last summer at SC and will have all the GE's finished after this semester although I may wanna retake Bio (pulling a C, but it's my only grade under an A with 20 credits and a job this semester)

Hoping to get in but won't be crushed if I don't. I can live with the fact that there may be people out there who were more qualified than me.

BTW i read that u were accepted already.. Congrats!

Does anyone know what SC typically does with a student who has a high GPA with alot of units, but has the 2nd semester english comp. class in progress right now?

What i mean is, do they usually admit, reject, or request spring grades before decision?

from what i was told, if you are missing one of the three REQUIRED courses which are a math class, english 100, and the critical thinking class, they will not make a decision until a grade is recieved. I am on the same boat, and if i get accepted anywhere else i will write the USC rep an email asking if theres any way to get a decision without a final grade.

If I'm trying to transfer as a sophomore (im a freshman now) do I have to have taken the math, comp, and critical thinking classes? Or could i take them in my sophomore year at USC?
