Hello,
This week I was awarded the Trustee (full-ride) scholarship at USC, and just last night I was admitted into Brown University. I am having a hard time deciding whether I should go with the financially safe option, or the ivy league option, so I'd love to hear some opinions on either school. At both schools I would most likely major in Neuroscience with a minor in Vocal Performance. Also, I am strongly considering med school after college. Would USC or Brown help me most with getting in? I have heard the pre-med competition at Brown is intense. Anyways, just let me know your opinions.

If you are strongly considering med school, then the most important considerations should be: where can I get the highest GPA? where will I be happiest? (leads to better grades) where can I get the best support? which is the least expensive option? The name on your college degree is not as important as your GPA, MCAT score, EC’s and recs.

I’d suggest that USC with the Trustee scholarship and Neuroscience BS program can prepare you well for the ultra competitive med school process. If you are full pay, the cost differential is enormous. D decided on USC with Pres over HYPS as a full pay and knows other pre-med T/P scholars who did the same. Not getting into debt from undergrad will allow more flexibility for these students during med school.

USC has a new pre-health major in the Environmental Studies Program called Environmental Science and Health. It is tuned to meet the requirements of the 2015 MCAT revisions.

Brown is the lease prestigious of the Ivies, that is a fact. USC has more national recognition and is up and coming. graduating from college with little or no debt is a no brainer. Medical school is very, very expensive. if you do well at USC, and chances are that you will, you will get into all of the top medical schools. if you need to borrow significant amounts of money, reserve that for graduate or medical school. if this were Harvard or Princeton, my analysis would be slightly different, depending upon financial aid offered at those schools.

good luck and fight on!

SC has Dr. Antonio Damasio, one of the most famous neuroscientists in the world, on the faculty. His wife, Dr. Hanna Damasio, is also a noted researcher in the subject. The Dornsifes have a strong interest in this field and have donated generously for labs, staff, etc. On the Dornsife website you can read about other professors in the department.

Check out Dr. Damasio’s achievements on any search engine.
