USC=U of Student Confusion

ALright CC'ers I am in a pickle. Here's my dilemma: I just was notified of admission via snail mail on friday 2/8/2008. I am highly qualified (35 ACT, ranked 4/660, 4.0 GPA, Good EC's and essays and Recs too) for a scholarship and yet when I log into the Explore USC site, it gives me the April USC dates and no mention of any scholarships. I need a Trustee to go to USC and thought for sure I would at least get interviewed so here are my questions. Is there still a chance I will be notified, and perhaps there is some glitch in the site or they havent updated it yet? If not, can I appeal to the USC board of admissions and request a re-evaluation of my application and try to get an interview for Trustee? Please let me know of any and all info. any of you have because I am truly in a dilemma here seeing as to how USC is my top choice and I feel as though I have been cheated out of something I truly do deserve. thanks all!

You do know that you can get financial aid outside of merit scholarships, right? You don't deserve anything, especially when they're giving it to you. You might have applied to a college that has awarded all of its scholarships out already.

Since your Explore USC dates are in April, you're probably going to get a dean's scholarship or no scholarship.

The only thing I could think of is that USC likes high SAT, you have high ACT. Has anybody got invite for Trustee with high ACT?

I got invited for trustee with a 33 ACT and 2000 SAT.

^Thanks for the information. I forgot that Mr Tubbz had ACT=28 when I posed that question.

see, its stuff like that that truly angers me. no offense, but when i compare stats to others who have been offered trustee, it doesnt seem logical.

and quixoticrick; yes, i DO deserve their scholarship money. they arent giving it out for free, theyre giving it out to highly-qualified students such as myself to go out there and get a great education on them and then in turn make a name for themselves and enhance the prestige and quality of USC in general.

There are others that are just as if not more qualified that haven't even heard yet...
I mean I got a 35 too and have a 4.7/4.0
sc was my number one butttt

As others have said, there is much more to these admissions than numbers. Nobody "deserves" anything, and your attitude so far has suggested that you may be a difficult roommate for some unfortunate soul next fall. Just chill out, feel free to annoy the admissions office with phone calls if you would like.

Being a good Trustee candidate is not just about SAT scores and GPA. In my opinion, you haven't been cheated out of anything. Good luck, nonetheless.

The site might take a while to update your information. Wait a while, and like others suggested, call the admissions office if you wish. It might make a difference.

Caliboy, are you a national merit finalist?

well maybe the others had a hook that you didn't have. just because you're qualified for something doesn't guarantee it. They have a lot of students with high stats, and looking through 34,000 applications doesn't really make a difference between the stats anymore...they look for hooks and USC is interested in diversity. They give money to the students they want to come the school really bad.

caliboi - Your sense of entitlement is astonishing! If that came through at all in your application, it's not surprising that USC admitted you without a huge scholarship. There are many kids here on CC with equally great stats who have either not been admitted yet, or have been admitted without Trustee or Presidential. For every kid represented on CC, there are surely many many others with equally great stats. With a holistic admissions process, you can't just decide you deserve this nice gift from USC. You got in, so enjoy that fact, and maybe be a little grateful. If you qualify for need-based aid, USC could still be in your future, so try to stay positive about it.

You guys are berating Caliboi way too much....yes he was harsh with his words but his anger is not unfounded.....a person with 35 ACT and a ranking of 4/660 would likely be recruited even by the top ivies....he deserves to be qualified for atleast the interview if not the scholarship

And Caliboi i can understand why you are angry however save your frustration till april...there are several other ways in which this thing could work out for you ....USC gives out many non-trustee/presidential schoarships too.....so make sure you call them up and speak to them and wait till april
P.S. are you an nmf ?? because if you are then thats on possible way through already

I don't think USC prefers SAT or ACT over the other ... I didn't even take the SAT and I am up for a scholarship. And although I do agree your stats qualify you for a scholarship gradewise, maybe other people are more well-rounded? (I'm not trying to cause more anger, I'm simply suggesting they look at other things besides grades when reviewing an applicant.)

haha i know how you feel dude. i was rejected from both emory scholars and jefferson scholars at uva.. scholarship money is hard to come by !

sat - 2310
3/477
good ecs and leadership! good essays! who knows! for the jeff scholars i guess i wasnt conservative enough.. and no idea about the emory one..

like in the jefferson scholar interview i had, you could seriously notice all of thier smiles go down when i said something sort of liberal like, "yes, i think everybody should be entitled to some sort of healthcare"

emory.. not a minority ??

^^^^LOL. Should've been a Republican :)

CC'ers...my apoligies if im coming off arrogant or conceited, never my intentions. i suppose i am just quite frustrated and am taking my anger out on the CC boards hahaha. i am just feeling lef tin the dark and just hoping for the best i guess. just trying to see if anyone else was in my situation too...

and no, i am not NMF.

It's okay, you seem like a nice guy. I think everyone is just frustrated because it's a waiting game. I know that I am -- preliminary review since December 3. I know that they're awfully busy but I still hate this waiting!
