USC < UCLA?!

How the heck did it ever come to this? I always considered USC to be a really tough school to get into, but how can UCLA be considered tougher?? Or am I just saying this because I'm a CA resident?

....or perhaps because you're a troll

Both schools aren't all that great. It's like asking us which car is better.....a honda or a toyota? Well, both cars suck compared to a BMV or a ferrari so nobody gives a fart.

lol. UCLA is not necessarily tougher, but it a generally more prestigious (nationally) school in areas such as law, history, business, engineering - though USC rules SoCal business scene (and film). I'm from SoCal...but LA is just a better school b/c its so much more well-rounded...:p

both suck~!!!!!! just kidding but compared to ivies, they both lag behind no offense.

What exactly is meant by "troll"?

"How the heck did it ever come to this? I always considered USC to be a really tough school to get into, but how can UCLA be considered tougher??"

i'm surprised you're making this statement. in the past, USC was the school that was really easy to get into. so i'd think your statement of "how the heck did it ever come to this?" should be applied towards USC's increasing difficulty in admissions because it is no longer considered an easy school to get into. but i still don't see the logic in your statement because UCLA has been and still is the tougher school to get into (based on % admitted).

Law: UCLA = USC

Business: UG - USC > UCLA, MBA - UCLA > USC (used to be equal, but one bad class and placement lead to major drop)

Engineering: UG - UCLA = USC, Grad - USC > UCLA

Comm: USC > UCLA

Film: USC > UCLA

Public Policy: USC > UCLA

History: UCLA > USC

Sciences: UCLA >> USC

Pharmacy: USC > UCLA

Philosophy: UCLA = USC

Design: UCLA >> USC

Music: USC > UCLA

etc.

USC and UCLA are virtually equal. Don't tell the UCLA people though, cause in their eyes UCLA >> USC.

There's my best attempt at a unbiased assessment.

to add onto that list...

Medicine: UCLA > USC

Medicine primary care: UCLA > USC

Nursing: UCLA >> USC

Therapy: USC >> UCLA

Public Health: UCLA > USC

Education: UCLA >> USC

Public Policy: USC > UCLA

Grad social sciences and humanities (poli sci, english, economics, history, sociology, etc): UCLA >> USC

Psychology: UCLA >> USC

yea UCLA and USC are virtually equal... ;)

What exactly is meant by "troll"?

a troll is someone who posts just to cause fighting and controversy.

there is no way ucla and usc are equal academically. ucla pwns usc. athletically....perhaps

I think if a year ago (when USC's stats were even less impressive than currently) UCLA's own Daily Bruin Editors could admit that USC was on the academic heels of UCLA, and in a few ways had surpassed it, then perhaps it's not such a wild notion. Making a blanket statement like ucla owns usc academically - and really, making that statement for any comparison between any schools - is rather dim. I could think of ways in which my local community college is superior to Harvard. And the gap between those two is much more vast than that between USC and UCLA, if one exists.

Berkley overpowers both of them, very easily.

Well, from what I heard from other people who'd gone there or took some courses there, USC's curriculum isn't very rigorous or demanding. Of course, just because they don't work you like a dog doesn't mean it's bad.

"Berkley overpowers both of them, very easily."

Again, I caution against making blanket statements. While Berkeley is perhaps inarguably academically dominant, the two ('SC & 'LA) have become almost as selective with UCLA's % admitted stat even surpassing Berkeley's in certain years... though of course, Berkeley students still have slightly higher credentials and more people apply to UCLA. For those who would jump on this, I'm not saying that because UCLA accepted less students in a few given years, its harder to get into; rather, I'm just tossing out a stat UCLA has in its favor. Additionally, UCLA has more research output and receives more research funding. I'm sure the UCLA students on this board could call attention to even more things in their column.

So no, Berkeley does not overpower both of them "easily."

yes, Cal is more prestigous than LA...but that's not saying much. It's like saying Havard is more regarded than Columbia. very few will dispute that. but the differences are very marginal. regardless of all the pointless data that the USNews offer, Cal will remain as one of the powerhouses of Academic...UCLA will play second fiddle, but i see nothing wrong with that.

Let me tell u some details bout USC's Admission record this year.... I had applied to USC's Business school [UG] and was shockingly rejected outright... I got a letter stating this was their harshest admission selection in the last 56 years.... They sent a seperate brochure stating the averages of students in the class of 2009 entering freshman...

Total Number of appliacnts - 38975
Total number of seats [Fall] - 2700
Admissions Selectivity - 26 % got selected
Avg SAT score - 1395
Avg High school grade/gpa - Straight A's / 4.00

In addition the letter stated that on average students had done 4 AP's and numerous EC acitivites. So to say that USC is now EASIER to get into than UCLA IS A BUNCH OF CRAP...

Sorry to hear about the outcome Nash... despite what many CC'ers would like to think, USC is indeed quite difficult to get into. Don't lost hope, there's always the possibility of transferring if you're really into Marshall...

USC is indeed, quite difficult to get into, although, for some reason, it lacks respect from many people. I'm not sure why this phenomenon is. I don’t have any ties with the school (my brother even goes to UCLA). Perhaps it has to do with the apparent (and possibly real) regional aspect of the school. I would definitely believe that USC has stronger departments than UCLA is some areas, such as Film (although it’s relatively close, because both are phenomenal) and engineering.

i have heard the contrary about public policy actually.

and i cant help but wonder, shrek knows what a troll is, but with comments like the one he follows up with does he know he acts like one? they're very "gee, i wonder where you go to school" type comments.

and beleive it or not, USC is very close to being equal to UCLA (and lets keep in mind some when comparing admit rates UCLA's in state as well as out of state), thats part of the reason the bickering has become so fierce, if there truly was much disparity we wouldnt even be having this annoying conversation so much.

Despite what some people have said, I still think that UCLA is definitely more difficult to get into than USC, and I have lived in the L.A. area for a very long time.....i know many people who have gone to USC, and many people who have gone to UCLA, and the people I know who have gone to UCLA overall have stronger academic records than those who have gone to USC. Although I will admit that USC has gotten harder to get into over the years....

And I'm sorry but USC is not "better" at engineering than UCLA, USC just has better PR.
