facts as in asians being the best at computers and engineering in general… i never said anything correlating asians and ucla nor usc… if i’ve done that, then i’m sorry…

i don’t fell it will be inferior… they’re both great schools, and i’m having a tough time choosing between them, hence the reason why i posted this in the first place

and why are you actually arguing with me rather than helping me?

by no means have i planned on disrespecting either school… i am afraid to make the wrong choice, and asked for people’s opinions on both schools… now instead of helping both you Nester and vinceh are trying to start an argument with me that i don’t plan on continuing…

which brings out my point…

please… i ask again…

ANYONE KNOWS the similarities/differences between SAMUELLI and VITTERBI?

mlonelywalker10 --you are trying to decide between two excellent engineering programs and Universities in general! I think it comes down to where you will feel more comfortable–my son was convinced USC was the place for him but ultimately decided that UCLA and Samuelli is where he wants to be (just a better fit for him).

There is definitely no right or wrong answer here! As for what the future holds, as a past hiring manager when we are talking about schools like UCLA, USC, CAL, MIT… I have NEVER based my decision on where someone went to school–it has always been about the applicant not their university(with that said please note I was not hiring engineers but rather scientists and the like).

best of luck–sounds like you can not make a bad decision here! :)

thank you everyone… unfortunately since i’m 3,000 miles I don’t have the resources for a flight ticket so I can personally visit both schools… so I’m going to have to figure it out somehow… USC VS UCLA… SAMUELLI VS VITTERBI…

USC is smaller and private and therefore less impacted by the vagaries of the State of California budgeting process. UCLA is a large public institution behind only Berkeley is selectivity in the California system. All of the California state colleges are going through an upheaval due to economic/budgetary issues. While we can all speculate on the impacts, that’s all that it is, speculation. So it comes down to some basic questions:

Do you want a big environment or medium sized?
Do you want an in-city experience (USC) or a slightly more neighborhood feel (UCLA)?

The GPA/SAT differences between the two schools is trivial, so the size of the pond is irrelevant, everyone swimming beside you will be of equal caliber. You can’t get an answer on Viterbi v Samuelli because it’s very rare to find one person who has experienced both locations; it would be no different than asking someone to compare Tufts and BC. The people at each school could tell you about their experiences, but could only rely on hearsay about the other school. I suggest reading the Viterbi threads here and the Samuelli threads on the UCLA board. You might get some sense of the attitude differences from those discussions.

mlonelywalker10 – of the schools that you have actually visited what do you consider your “perfect” fit? We are on the East but previously lived in CA so we have visited numerous schools–if you can identify your perfect school I might be able to tell you if UCLA or USC is more similar. For example I consider University of Rochester pretty much the USC of the East, and I would consider UVA to be similar to UCLA… Keep in mind you will get a GREAT education at both schools and for free at that!!:)

a school where i would have an easier time communicating with my professors… no TA’s to stand in the way…

opportunities to intern, co-op and research were plenty

i’m a musician, so probably something where i’d be able to use my musical abilities… perhaps a minor in the arts?

help when i need it (most important out of all)

safety… is this really a problem at usc? or is it just the rivalry speaking here?

my whole life revolved around a small town, so now i want to experience the city and what it offers…

here in the east coast i looked at:
WPI - medium sized, great feel… good fit for me
BU - right in the city, no campus… not that much of a fit… but not opposed to it

so yeah… i know i’ll be fine wherever i go, but i want the disconnect to go away… my mind is at ucla, but my heart is at usc…

last but not least, friendships… is it easier to make new friends at either school?

thanks again…

and once again sorry for the asian comment… i didn’t mean to hurt anyone… i’m just a confused soul… lol

If you like the feel of WPI I would think USC would be a better fit. Based upon your list of what is important I do think overall USC is a better place for you; the one area where I think UCLA is a better match is in the area of Safety- the area around UCLA is nicer then the area around USC. For what it is worth I think the WPI surroundings are questionable, but not as questionable as USC’s.I have been to USC numerous times and have always felt completely safe on campus; just be smart when you travel off campus and you should be fine
There you have it, the parent of an incoming UCLA engineering student telling someone to pick USC over UCLA-a first???-lol

this is just my heart talking, not my brain.

but if i were you, id choose SC. you said you want friendships. both schools have it, but honestly all the hype about the trojan family…from what ive experienced is true. and ive only stepped onto the campus a few times. when i see other trojan students, im think to myself yes! another trojan. we are not alone.

sure there are plenty of UCLA bruins, but i tend to see trojans to be much more unique. theyre not just friends, theyre family. hence the trojan family These are not just classmates, aquintances, theyre the same folks who have the fight on spirit, the trojans who fight on for ol sc, and really the spirit of the troy.

when picking a school, school spirit was very important to me and i honestly am SO proud of myself to say I am a trojan. bruins are nice too, but cal is better.

if engineering is better at UCLA, go there.
if engineering is better at USC, come here.

you cant go wrong with either. both are great schools. but regardless of the schools rank or status, it matters most that this school feels like a 2nd home to you. this is where you will learn about yourself, what you can accomplish, and strive to be the best. find that place and that is your school. for me it was USC. <3

UCLA has the better biology program and a better experience, while USC has less people, but superior connections.
I would chose UCLA, but now you have your parents to think of…

But in case there are any future Trojans/Bruins deciding, I say you should go to USC because you can have sex with girls on the roof of classroom buildings. Hellllllllllll yeahhhhhhh. As quoted by USC’s very own star football player, Marc Tyler, USC is nationally renowned as the University of Sexual Ballers. Let’s go USB! Fight on!

Edit:
Oh wow… I didn’t realize how old this thread was… my apologies for digging this up… I was just captivated by the previous posts (especially the one above me haha!).

As a side note, I thought it was funny that the story was such a big deal. Who cares if two consenting people had sex in public? If anything, people could take a hint ;p.
