One of the most distinguished faculty members at SC is Professor Solomon Golomb. He will receive the prestigious 2016 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Electrical Engineering. Other recipients have been Einstein, Marie Curie, Stephen Hawkins and Andrew Viterbi. Dr. Golomb received the National Medal of Science in 2011. His honors include the Shannon Award, Hamming Medal and the Proctor Prize.
Dr. Golomb invented Golomb coding and has been tapped for the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Science. He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and the Russian Academy of Science. He is also the recipient of many honors from USC.
Professor Shang-Hua Teng was awarded his second Gödel Prize. His first was in 2008 for his work in theoretical computer science and the most recent for his research in algorithmic graph theory. Dr. Teng is a Sloan Fellow, Simons Investigator and recipient of the Fulkerson Prize
Dr. John Slaughter received the HENAAC Award for “Role Model in the Flelds of Science, Mathematics and Engineering”/
Three noted Viterbi alumni were elected to the National Academy of Engineering: Ming Hsieh, Dr. S. Guha and James Hsieh.
Popular Science magazine selects a “Brilliant Ten” each year. These individuals are 38 years or younger. Two of the ten this year are Viterbi faculty members.
Drs. Maja Mataric and Urbashi Mitra were recognized in the “Top 100 Inspiring Women in Stem”.
The Vodaphone Innovation Prize from Germany was awarded to Dr. G. Caire for 2015.
Dr. Andrea Armani was selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and Dr. Stacey Finley was named a 2015 Emerging Scholar.
Drs. Terry Sargent and James Weiland are new Fellows of AIMBE.
