i was accepted into usc marshall and bc csom. i don't know what i want to do with my life yet, so i would prefer to go to a school that gives me a broader range of opportunities. i know that usc is great for employment on the west, and bc for the east, but i don't know where i want to live yet. i am leaning towards living in california, but i want to go to grad school in nyc.

i know that both schools have similar rankings, but where i'm from, bc has a really good reputation and usc is known to be a party school.

socially, bc might be a bit better because i'm not really that into greek life, but i HATE the cold weather. i feel stupid choosing one school over the other because of weather.. but winter makes me miserable.

i dont know what to dooo

What are the other factors? Like cost?

Boston College is more prestigious, but USC would be a fun school to attend.

although boston college is amazing, USC will give you the complete college experience. California is great we have all of four days of winter, just kidding. The weather is awesome here but other schools have good weather too. The alumni connection down here is amazing. Especially in So Cal, when people here that your an SC grad they are so impressed. As a daughter of an SC grad and as an incoming freshman next year I have experienced the incredible school spirit. You don’t have to be part of the greek system to have a good time here. Most of the students choose not to be involved with frats and sororities anyways. I think the prestige varies from coast to coast. BC is probably better known on the EC but over here on the west coast USC is looked up to. Obviously I sound a little biased but USC is truley an amazing school with wonderful opportunities.

It probably comes down to preference, but I would consider Marshall as a slightly better school. USC as a whole seems to be on the rise as well and does have a stronger alumni network (though BC’s is quite strong as well). BC kids will also be directly competing with Harvard, MIT, Tufts, BU, etc. for jobs coming out of school, where USC graduates will likely have not as stiff competition (I imagine UCLA and perhaps other Cal schools).

With the exception of Wharton and perhaps MIT, undergrad biz is regional. BC will give you better prospects in the NE and 'SC in SoCal. If you hate cold, go to Marshall. Grad schools won’t care. For an MBA, work experience is much more important.

fwiw: last time I checked, it gets cold in NY. :)

Not according to USNews, which ranks Marshall as a top 10 for undergrad biz.

I agree both are mostly regional in placement so go nearer where you want to work after college. Otherwise equal.

BC for New York and wall street type jobs.

USC for southern Cal and entertainment type jobs.

Very different schools.

I think the student profles are very similar except BC has more Catholics and USC more non-Catholics. Both appeal to upper middle-class kids but USC is wealthier as a college and gives better fin aid so it also has a larger contingent of the lower income but smart kids.

ahhh thanks so much. i’m really leaning towards usc right now, but everyone from where i live is telling me to go to bc because its “the better school”

@bluebayou ahaha yes i know it’s cold in nyc, but for me personally, nyc > boston

I agree with barrons. Besides the religious heritage, the two schools are very similar. Both have a lot of upper middle class kids. Both have lotsa pre-professional types. Both do liberal arts well. 'SC also offers engineering, as well as a med school. Both love D1 sports. BC also has hockey. Both have great school spirit. Both schools have a bunch of partiers. 'SC is larger.

'SC is an urban campus. BC straddles the Boston City line, but is more suburban in community.

According to USNews, Marshall is the “better” school. According to Business Week, CSOM is the better school.

If you really really hate winter, this is sort of a no-brainer. Dec-March generally cold in Boston…that’s half the school year.

BC is a typical liberal elite school in the northeast. Top families from old money.

USC is a younger more west coast oriented school with a good greek scene and more of a laid back lifestyle.

According to Business Week, BC’s CSOM is the better school. According to USNews, USC’s Marshall is the “better” school. Probably pretty equal although graduates of BC go to Wall Street/Boston companies/firms and graduates of USC go to companies in LA/San Diego.

Very different schools.

thanks everyone!

i’m visiting usc this week so hopefully i know by the end of my trip! :)
