USC vs Berkeley vs Michigan vs WUSTL

Hello! I've been accepted to those 4 schools, along with UNC, and I'm trying to decide which school to attend. I am looking for business career.

I am currently in USC Marshall, WUSTL Olin, and I will be applying to Michigan Ross and Berkeley Haas. Money is not an issue, but I got half tuition to UNC and USC. I'm leaning towards Berkeley, because of their reputation and great location, but USC is not much behind. I am a presidential scholars, and I absolutely loved it when I went to USC to interview. I will most likely be double majoring in Business and Economics here.

Right now, I think USC and Berkeley are my top 2 choices. USC's lack of financial problems and great school atmosphere is awesome, but as an Asian, Berkeley's incredible reputation is tempting. Their Business school, Haas, is pretty good as well. I will be visiting Berkeley next week. Can you guys compare these 5 schools, or mainly USC and Berkeley, for me? Thanks a lot!

Also, where can I find the catalog where lists and describes the courses offered at USC?

I’m sorry, can you elaborate on this part: “but as an Asian, Berkeley’s incredible reputation is tempting.”

I don’t get it. Are you saying because you’re Asian, you’re attracted to prestige? lol That’s probably not it but I just found that party weird hahaha.

Lol, you are right, that does sound strange. I mean that, as an Asian, my grandparents and their friends have all heard of Berkeley. Actually, I think my grandparents only know 4 or 5 universities in the US, and Berkeley is one of them, which is pretty incredible. As a result, I have an urge to ‘make them feel proud’ by going to what they believe is an extremely prestigious university. In Asia, Berkeley is on par with any university in the world, weather it be true or false.

This is, of course, not a good reason to choose a college, but I have done research on Berkeley, and I don’t mind going there at all. While their strength is in their graduate schools, their undergraduate schools are pretty good too. The only thing I don’t like about Berkeley, apart from the financial crisis, is the lack of security. At USC, I am guaranteed a double major in business and economics, while at Berkeley, I will have neither. (although presumably I can get at least an economics major).

MagicalMalik, what schools did you choose over to go to USC, and why?

i believe you have to apply to haas at the end of your junior year so you might not even get in. it really depends where you want to work and what atmosphere you want.

haas/ross are around the same level to me and marshall is a step down but marshall would be better than ross for getting california jobs imo

chuckcarls,
Please spend a few moments reading the thread from “Bored Student” (The moniker is a joke.) He is in Marshall and has commented on many aspects of the Marshall experience.

Your parents have concerns about prestige. It is perception. Please use the search engine to find my posts where I do a statistical comparison of some aspects of CAL and USC.

USC has alumni clubs in Beijing, Hong Kong, Hsinchu, Kaohsiung, Pearl River Delta, Shanghai, Indonesia, Hioshima, Kansai, Nagoya, Tokyo, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Seoul, Taipei and Thailand.

Please let you parents know the following are USC alumni:

Are your parents aware the U of C. system is undergoing huge budget cuts? There have been cuts in faculty, lecturers, TAs, equipment, labs, computers, communication systems, faculty resources, etc.

I do not know if you are an international student or a California resident. However, SC has offered you approximately $80,000 to offset the price of your education. In addition, if you do attend SC and by hard work earn stellar grades you have the opportunity to apply for generous merit scholarships given by the Marshall School for continuing students.

Do check the student’s thread about Marshall. Also, I think he had some fine choices for colleges and decided on SC.

Good luck in your college journey…

chuckarls - Choosing USC was basically a no brainer. I chose it over schools like Boston College, UCSD, UCSB, Northeastern, etc. USC definitely appealed to me the most. However, my twin also was accepted to UCLA and Berkeley, and he still chose USC over them without thinking about it. He didn’t want to go to a huge public school like Berkeley and LA, and with the budget cuts and what not, Berkeley and LA weren’t looking any more appealing. Moreover, we’re very social people and want to be in a school that is known to be a fantastic place to socialize and where competition isn’t known to be so cut throat, and USC fit the bill perfectly. I’m fond of USC because not only is it so widely respected and has top notch education, but the undergraduate experience there is highly enjoyable. USC has an terrific balance of superb education and social life that no other university has. We simply see ourselves having an amazing time at USC - not at Berkeley or UCLA. But that’s us.
