USC vs. Berkeley vs. Penn

Hello~
I got into UPenn, USC, and Berkeley for fall 2008. and I was wondering which school is better in terms of biology, school reputation, etc. I want to major in premed. and I dont know which school would be best for me. I visited all the schools, and thought they were all good. Can someone tell me their characteristics in terms of biology as a major, school reputation, how the school would prepare me for a career, preparation for med school, etc.
Thanks. ^^

Well, they're all prestigeous and top tier schools that are quite well known. If you go by names alone the winner would be the University of Pennsylvania given that it's an Ivy League. Berkeley is known to be quite a fantastic school but the prestige and noteworthiness outside of California would definitely be less than UPenn but still great nonetheless. USC is someplace in between.

how do you already know that you got into Penn? ED? or likely letter?

Actually, Berkeley is much more internationally renowned than Penn...

Sorry to not answer your question (I don't know about Biology), but would you please post your stats here?

We'd all be very anxious to see stats of someone who was accepted to both USC and UPenn-ED. (I understand from your earlier posts that you have not yet been accepted to Cal and this is a hypothetical question.)

Thanks and Congrats!

id say berk

cal is more known internationally. usc if you want to work in socal area.

this is obviously a hypothetical question...

please add an "if" in the front of your question

I disagree entirely. Berk is way better in all respects vs USC in Socal or any California area for that matter. I dare to say, Berk is ivy league caliber.

I'd have to agree with Dory; USC is an awesome school, don't get me wrong, but Cal is more prestigious in virtually every aspect (except dental/film lol), and you get that education for half the price of SC. But both are great schools, just completely different atmospheres as well. I'd rank them:

UCB (interchangeable with Penn in some areas)
Penn
USC

not sure for biology but my son choose USC over Penn for engineering. He did not apply to Berk.

I would rank for engineering.

Berk
USC
Penn

except usc has smaller classes and is much more of a lac experience than Berk where class size and use of TA's can be a problem.

Unfortunately, I would (generally) have to agree with vc08's assesment: while USC is a VERY good and reputable school today, Berkeley is really more prestigious in the minds of many many. On the other hand, I've personally always favored private-school education, and from what I've heard from my Berkeley friends, I've really appreciated the small class sizes and personal attention here at USC. UPenn... well it's Ivy-League, there is no denying that aspect.

1) UC Berkeley
2) UPenn
3) USC

umm if you got into penn already, then it was ED, so there's really no purpose in you asking this question..

I think it largely depends on where you want to get a job in the future. While USC and Berkeley are both wonderful schools, Berkeley might be a bit better in the biology field than USC is. But if you want to live on the east coast or somewhere in mid-US, then I'd go for Penn.

Penn (Ivy League...tops it all)
Berkeley
USC (USC is outstanding. But believe it or not it isn't even as nationally well known. And I love SC)

smoltz: The OP asked the same Q on the Berkeley thread, and he said it was hypothetical...just wanted to see how they all match up. He has been admitted to Penn and SC, but Cal decisions don't come out until March I believe.

^^ You say he was already admitted to penn. Penn doesn't have EA, so he would've had to apply ED. He's binded there so no matter if he gets into berkeley, he can't go.

Agree .. PENN hasn't announced regular decisions yet. If he is in Penn he has no choice and applied Early Decision which is binding.

Right, this is all hypothetical

no he got in ed. he posted this in another thread.. why do your research at this time in the process? sort of a moot point now?
