USC vs BU vs Rensselaer: BME

Hello! This is my first topic, and one of my first few posts, after about 6 months of lurking.

Anywho, I was admitted to these three institutions under biomedical engineering. I've looked at a couple of rankings of general/overall engineering and specifically BME, and I'm proud I got into places that stand so high [BU being the highest according to US News].
[Side info, I am on the waitlist at Harvey Mudd, and appealed rejection to UCLA and Cal; so basically those are high contenders too, if possible.]

Now I'm visiting USC soon, attending a local Rensselaer presentation soon after, and am getting more BU info from a fellow admit friend who lives in Boston. Basically, I'm asking for environment here as much as I am academics and such. I'm interested in research fyi.

So CC masses, can you help me pick between these three for Biomedical Eng? FFFFFFIGHT.

I can’t help you much for Rensselear or USC, but can answer any BU BME questions you have

I would personally choose between USC and BU as they are the most recognized schools compared to a school like RPI. I really do not put a lot of stock in undergrad department rankings, as it matters mainly if your end goal is graduate school and the quality of research opportunities (I do not believe RPI is highly rated anyway in this area). If you want to go into industry, location is very important and boston and souther california have MANY more bioe job opportunities.

Thanks, I had read recently that RPI had increased its BME department in terms of research funding, but in terms of internships and jobs you have a good point, newname.

I visited USC yesterday, the tours were great and the campus itself is swell. They stressed the easy access to research [if you want it, you can go after it without a lengthy application process, basically] so I’m glad at that.

Bump I suppose, just want more input.

I’m highly leaning towards USC, but I went to a small so-cal presentation/discussion about Rensselaer, by a very knowledgeable alum. It was interesting, but didn’t really make it stand out any more.

What is (apparently, since you’re leaning against it) putting you off about BU? Their BME department is a major powerhouse, and this is one of the best areas in the country for BME-related jobs and internships.

I suppose it’s because it’s just far away. I feel close to home, so that’s it. Where I live now is actually another BME hotbed job-wise, and it’s an hour from USC.

Rensselaer’s Center for Biotechnology is one of most advanced on earth.

[Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies at Rensselaer](http://www.rpi.edu/research/biotech/)

You may want to do more research on this facility before you discount the BME program.
All of RPI’s engineering programs are outstanding and BME is no exception.
