I am trying to decide between USC and Chapman Film Schools. I am from Southern California and am familiar with both areas. I have received the Presidential Scholarship at Chapman and a much smaller merit scholarship at USC. The cost is a factor, but I am more concerned about the education and the experience. I like the atmosphere at Chapman better but feel that USC will provide more opportunities for internships and jobs in the future. Any feedback would be appreciated.

You have it exactly right… USC is IN Los Angeles where movies are made. It is the more established film school and the connections probably cannot be beat. I know freshmen at USC who are having to juggle their classes due to opportunities to work on films. Having said that, if you absolutely love Chapman or would have to borrow an enormous amount of money to attend USC, there will be plenty of opportunities at Chapman if you are industrious. USC is better, but if it is $25,000.00 or $40,000.00 better is something only you and your family can decide. One thing to consider is that you financial aid could go up in subsequent years at USC. I have met a few kids over the years who got merit scholarships in their soph, jr, & sr years in the film department at USC. Many school websites have a listing of where their grads got jobs upon graduation- something you might check out. Good luck with your decision.

Sleepless,
The SCA at SC is known around the world. Sophia Loren sent both her sons to SCA. The new complex is amazing. Frankly, if you can enroll there is no comparison.

Have your parents tour the complex. See if you can sit in on a class. Discuss finances with your family and determine if you can manage the fees and tuition. Go to the website and watch the videos of former students. It is impressive.
If your parents feel SCA is an impossibility due to finances go to Chapman.

First of all Congratulations on getting accepted to both programs, but especially for getting accepted to USC. You obviously know how incredibly selective it is to get into the Cinema program at USC.

You also must have an incredible amount of talent otherwise you wouldn’t have been selected for either of these programs. Both Chapman and USC will be places where you can nurture your talent, develop your skills and learn your craft. Although USC may have some additional advantages in regard to resources, I’m sure you can get a similar educational experience at Chapman.

Where I think USC separates itself from any other program is in its prestige and the connections that you will be able to make through your association with the USC Cinema program. I am sure you are very aware that the film business, like any entertainment related industry, has a lot to do with who you know. Talent will get you so far, but many times it’s the connections you make that will open that all important door to your future success. Life is about making the most of the opportunities that present themselves. You can have all the talent in the world, but if you don’t have an opportunity to show it to the right people it may have a huge impact on your career and your future success.

USC won’t guarantee you success, but I think it will open more doors that could ultimately lead to success. So in my view, you just have to decide if the additional cost to attend USC is worth the potential future opportunities that may lead to a more accomplished film career.
