USC vs Emory for a premed?

I posted this on the Emory section but I feel like it may be a little biased...so I figured I'd post it up here to see the other end of the bias lol.

--

I'm a student from the midwest and I'm deciding between Emory or USC.

As far as academics go, my impression of these colleges is that Emory is better for my field of study (thinking about Neuroscience, Biology, or possibly Biomedical Engineer with a premed track)

Honestly I'd prefer to be in LA, but I've heard great things about Atlanta as well.

Probably the biggest disappointment about Emory for me is the lack of a football team, but I feel like if I actually go there, it won't be that big of a deal as I can just root for the team of my choice then when I watch college football.

Money is not an issue. I received very generous financial aid packages from both universities and the difference is negligible. I love both campuses, maybe with a slight favor towards the Emory campus.

From a very shallow and probably false view, one of my friends put it this way: Go to USC for the girls, alumni network, football, and the beach. Go to Emory for the prestige, academics, and the opportunities. I don't really believe it's as simple as that, but I do think there's some truth behind it. (not to say the academics/prestige of USC aren't amazing, just not on the level of Emory)

Basically I'm just wondering what everyone thinks about these two great universities when compared from a premed/life science perspective. Which school has more internship/research opportunities? How does the experience at each school compare? And finally what would be the pros/cons of choosing each school?

I appreciate all input/experiences. Thanks!

I think you should go to USC, and this is why.
I know a couple people that go to Emory, and they do not like it as much as you should like the college you attend. I know people who go to USC and love it. It seems like you wanna be in a big city, and if so I think LA is way better. It is also important where you want to live after college though. if you wanna live on the east coast, Emory would be more prestigious. However, on the west coast USC is probably more prestigious.

I am kind of in the same boat deciding between UNC Chapel hill and USC, so I am sorry I did not want to write a book about it but I probably could.

USC is amazing for internships and connections, athletics, people, diversity, and cmon…California is amazing. I think its the best state to live in-where else can you get a mixture of so many things- mountains, beach, desert.

Good luck :)

I turned down emory for USC without thinking about it twice.

Emory is not on the level of a school like HYPS where you would be able to claim that it is more prestigious, on a higher academic level etc than USC. They are basically peer schools.

Fatsushi,
Our home is in suburban Atlanta. The Coca Cola Foundation is a major donor to Emory.

In U.S. News there is a part for peer assessment with 5.0 being the highest. Harvard received a 4.9 score.
Peer assessment score:

Emory 4.0
USC 3.9 That is only a part of a point difference, not a chasm.

I think your friend underestimates the USC of today and the academic standing of the university. Please go to Bing and click on the list of famous alumni from USC.

You have visited both campuses. Enroll where you feel it will be the best fit for YOU.
