USC vs. UCLA and the declining rivalry

I concur with uschicka on the above.

As a UCLA grad, I am of the opinion that USC is a great school with potential to be an outstanding school. If the governing body at USC is careful with its growing endowment, and continues to use money wisely, then USC may one day be able to move up the ladder as it rightfully deserves.

However, keep in mind that the public is stupid. It doesn't know what makes for a good academic institution. When I said that I was considering Duke for my PhD, even my own relatively well-educated grandmother said, "Why a football school?" That's the general public for you.

As far as the rivalry goes in sports, UCLA will never be a contender in football that way you guys are. But at least we know how to make it to the NCAA tournament in basketball once in a while. ;)

But seriously, I welcome a better performing USC on all fronts! Competition is the lifeblood of the market, and it will only serve to make UCLA compete even harder! Keep it up Trojans, because I'd rather have a strong LA in all aspects!

NCAA basketball tournament... what's that?! :)

It's funny to me how UCLA has only managed to go all the way once in football, yet has managed to be at least a tournament contender in basketball almost every year...yet USC kicks so much arse in football but has trouble with basketball.

It's so random.

I have a friend who got a full ride + some other award to go to USC because she's a PSAT NMF. Guess what, she DIDNT pick it.
Yeah and my friend got a full-ride to UCLA, Berkeley, and USC (no full-ride to Stanford) and picked USC, what's your point?

I think that the fact that they are using their money to try and "buy" scores(which the students have) to raise their rankings is despicable
Buy scores to raise rankings? It seems like the word "buy" is set exclusively for USC. If you really believe that USC is the only school "buying" students, then I have a bridge to sell you. The words pot, kettle, and black come to mind.

Come back with a stronger argument, please.

It's refreshing to see a fair post from a UCLA grad. I agree with everything you say, even your "football school" comment.

In time, the "spoiled children" and "football school" stigma will wear off. There are already signs of change, as "serious" students are choosing SC over some very reputable schools. Take a look at our freshman stats this year and you'll be very surprised to see the quality coming in.

As for basketball, I see us making the tourney in about 4 years. We have a solid young backcourt and Floyd has been impressive in recruiting thus far. Really for basketball, the only way is up at this point. As for football, well I see us continuing to dominate ;).

Also I agree that fierce competition only boosts the level of both schools.

Well, I believe that being fair is only intelligent.

It doesn't mean I'm a USC fan on the court though. ;)

Where can we find these freshman stats?

"Or is someone just jealous their own institution didn't offer them some merit-aid?"

oooooh

I did get oodles merit aid from tulane but I turned them down
no I didnt get any duke merit aid

"rich white drunk kids you are referring to are someday going to be your bosses, your son's bosses, and your grandson's bosses"

yeah, if that does not typify the arrogance of USC people, I don't know what will. Its also racist.

"He supposedly isn't a UCLA person"

Oh, I'm not pro-UCLA by any measure. if you look through my post history you'll see that I'm also harsh on UCLA. After all, I do research there and so have first hand experience with the incessant traffic, crowding and dingy facilities.

my reference to buying scores refers to the fact that USC specifically targeted NMFs. I agree that this happens at PLENTY of other schools. But, Duke doesnt just "buy" the scores. Their scores are already near the top and higher than USC's(I think?, someone check that one out)

USC=University of Surreptitious curs
USC= University of Simpleton Cads

Hmm, what are curs and cads?

Cad
Main Entry: cad
Pronunciation: 'kad
Function: noun
Etymology: English dialect, unskilled assistant, short for Scots caddie
1 : an omnibus conductor
2 : a man who acts with deliberate disregard for another's feelings or rights (this is how I used it)

Main Entry: cur
Pronunciation: 'k&r
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, short for curdogge, from (assumed) Middle English curren to growl (perhaps from Old Norse kurra to grumble) + Middle English dogge dog
1 : a mongrel or inferior dog
2 : a surly or cowardly fellow

once again, this is the quote that sticks out

"rich white drunk kids you are referring to are someday going to be your bosses, your son's bosses, and your grandson's bosses"

Thank you for your insults. They have shown me your arrogance.

""rich white drunk kids you are referring to are someday going to be your bosses, your son's bosses, and your grandson's bosses""

respond to this please.

I'm sorry, but you are the one who used the phrase "rich white drunk kids" in post #15. Under your own standards (post #29), you are a racist. Fine, there are arrogant people at USC. There are also arrogant people at UCLA. There are arrogant people everywhere. That does not represent the entire student population. To barge into a USC v. UCLA thread and flame it is ridiculous. Please leave us.

"Under your own standards (post #29), you are a racist"

How?

"rich white drunk kids you are referring to are someday going to be your bosses, your son's bosses, and your grandson's bosses"

youre taking something that wasnt really meant to be taken seriously a little too seriously. why dont you take a breather, and think before you act.

The number of NMS given by USC has actually decreased over the past several years and the school has stated that it has no plans of increasing that number. Conversely their scores have skyrockted, so I'd say that your idea of USC "buying" scores is false and only is a reflection of your subjective view of the school.

Sorry, Duke "buys" students also, they are called Robertson scholars. For more on this see:

Outside the Ivy league almost all schools buy students in some way. Even within the Ivy league there is significant aid given to star students.

I hate to break it to everyone who believes otherwise, but top schools are notorious for "buying" the intellect of top students, grad students, and professors. That's the name of the game.
