yup, its only bad when USC does it.

Nah, I personally think it's good. Professors and students are commodities, let the market handle them!

i still can't figure out the racist thing. did anyone mention race at all on this thread?

"rich white drunk kids you are referring to are someday going to be your bosses, your son's bosses, and your grandson's bosses"

someone said that to me regarding my perception about the majority of students attending USC

ohhhh the "white kids". i would say thats not as much racism as stereotyping.

anyways, im sure(or hope) there are plenty of students, like myself, that plan on going to USC purely for the academics. i'd be dissapointed to find a bunch of stuck up "white" kids only there cause their parents had an extra 40k a year to waste.

and sempitern555, im sure dukes a great school. but so is usc. im sure they both have their share of spoiled "" kids.

sempitern555, I didn't say that to you, but I do know that you were the one who referred to USC as a "haven for rich white drunk kids" (post 15). And yes, I do consider it more stereotyping than racism, but you used the word "racist" in another post of yours.

I don't want to continue on this topic.

You referred to USC as a "haven for rich white drunk kids", so I responded, rather scarcastically, if you could not tell, by saying that those people you downgraded would someday be your boss. I'm simply taking the words out of your own mouth and feeding them back to you with a little insult.

Any further questions?

BTW I'm asian.

Where can we find these freshman stats?
These arent stats...but this was a thread listing schools that next year's freshman turned down for USC...

So... he has nothing better to do than lurk around the USC messageboard so he can randomly come out and flame it?

Wow, are all Duke grads so cool?

Sempiterm, this is what happens when you throw around words like "despicable." Is buying the brightest students despicable? No, not at all. It's a mere fact that non-Ivies do this as they must compete with each other for the brightest and best students. As UCLAri pointed out, as cold as it is, they are commodities, plain and simple. If you still find this practice "despicable", then perhaps you should indict your own alma mater; otherwise, you're either ignorant or a hypocrite. Take your pick. Furthermore, your accusations of racism also smack of hypocrisy considering you were the first one to use "white" as an adjective. Lastly, please refrain from posting on this board unless you have something constructive, insightful, or informative to say. You don't find any of us on the Duke board insulting Duke/UNC or calling Duke despicable, do you? No. We "rich," "white" (though I am not), "arrogant," and "drunk" kids have better things to do with our time.

Like enroll more national merit scholars than Duke. Boo ya, son!

Much as I respect Duke-- one of my closest friends is heading there this fall-- I never much pegged it as exactly multi-cultural and varied in socio-economic status. USC is full of rich, arrogant white kids my butt.

From the Princeton Review website:

DUKE is ranked #13 for little race/class interaction (and rated #6 as a jock school, if that makes a difference to anyone)

The following is a direct cut and paste:

What Duke Students Say About...

Student Body
The public perception of Duke's student body generally focuses on its "visible minority of social elitists who go out for cocktails and have the connections to get themselves out of any kind of troublewhite prep school types. I always know which handbag is 'in,' because 85 percent of the girls in this 'caste' strut around with it slung over their anorexic shoulders."..... Students agree that "Duke tends to be slightly cliquish because of the Greek system or even because of racial differences. Everyone gets along with one another, but there's still this 'high-schoolish' superficiality that pervades the Duke campus."

Duke is 57% Caucasian. USC is 47% Caucasian, and enrolls higher percentages of Asians and Hispanics.

Sempitern is totally WRONG on all points about USC being full of rich, arrogant, white kids.

He seems to be more likely referring to his own alma mater, actually.

"Quote:

as any person having any education will tell you. That sample of people attending USC is completely useless in making any sort of assertion regarding the average scores of people attending. I really would like to see official stats :) please. Thanks.

sempitern555

Duke's a great school and USC is one too. There are strengths and weaknesses in both schools. I respect your opinions, but I mean why do you have so much dirt with USC?

In fact, I mean what do you expect when you trash USC in a USC thread. I don't get it. USC is in fact getting better by the numbers each year, and they continue to become better. This thread isn't about USC and UCLA now, it's basically about your stereotypes on USC. That's why people have gotten offended, they love the school and you just diss it. Dissing it is okay, but giving falsifying information or making assumptions really offend. Obviously there are flaws in any system. There are flaws everywhere in Duke, Harvard, Yake, USC, UCLA, whatever. so just rest it, please?

I can't say that I didn't expect the response I got, but I still think people should post stats regarding the scores of matriculants.

"why do you have so much dirt with USC"

as I said before, it just rubs me the wrong way.

"Lastly, please refrain from posting on this board unless you have something constructive, insightful, or informative to say.
go ahead, trash UNC all you want.

my purpose is not to say that my alma mater is necessarily better than USC but rather, to point out what I perceive to be flaws in USC. Its nothing personal really.

I am a minority amongst minorities. Whenever I walked through USC's campus I got the feeling that I was not welcome. I didnt get that same feeling at Duke.

Lastly, the megastud just called himself rich arrogant and drunk.... what more can I say :D

Sempitern, you should read this:

Trolls

hmm, I would have to be a pretty dedicated troll to have 2800+posts

look through my post history though. I have changed opinions of colleges while other opinions have remained the same because of reactions from the people on cc

for example

Upenn was - is still -
Pton was - is now +
Columbia was - is still -
WAShu was - is now +/-, can't decide its med school is really good
UCLA was - is still - comes from personal experience of doing research there
USC was - is still -

So there, my opinions DO change. Most notable change was Pton.

Sempiterm,

The stats of the current entering class have not been released by USC for official viewing yet. The reason we know this year's stats is because they were referenced in the decision letters that were mailed recently, though this isn't publicly available. In the letters, it was noted that the average SAT of admits for this year was 1390 and the average GPA was 4.0.

If you however would like to see the stats of last year's matriculants, admits, and applicants, here it is: http://afaweb.esd.usc.edu/dcpage2.cfm?PageBaseID=50064

Notice that Peals-05 is correct in stating that statistically, USC is much more diverse than Duke. Additionally, according to the Princeton Review, 52% of USC's undergraduates receive financial aid; only 42% do at Duke.

Hmmm... not so rich and white after all - compared to Duke anyhow - are we? Frankly, it looks rather difficult to stereotype another entire student body as rich and white when one hails from Durham. Even just empirically, one can look at the PR comments Peals posted regarding Duke and compare it to those about USC and its diversity. As far as us exhibiting arrogance? Considering your posts in this thread, I'm going to have to invoke the H word I went off on in an earlier response. And drunk? I'm still trying to figure out how that's meant to be insulting...

" I think you've exhibited an entire school's worth yourself here."

I consider myself unable of accomplishing such a mighty feat, but if you say so ;)

incidentally, one of the reasons that I didnt apply to columbia was because of the arrogance exhibited by the adcoms there, eh, que sera sera.

btw, I do acknowledge peal's data

but you still did call yourself

"We "rich," "white" (though I am not), "arrogant," and "drunk" kids have better things to do with our time"

arrogant and drunk

Well I hope I haven't come across as arrogant. If so, then I apologize. And if I'm drunk... then I'd congratulate myself on being able to argue this cogently.
