USC's southern culture

Ive heard that alot of the students attending are racist and dislike northerns haha is there any truth to this? Is there a presence of southern culture at all? Obviously there is some but to what extent

We only dislike yankees who come down here and complain about southerners and how we do things.

There is racism here, but there’s racism up north too. We’re no more racist than any other part of the country. USC actually won an award for diversity and was the only school in SC to win it and I think only one of two schools in the SEC. Historically speaking, USC was one of the first schools in the south to admit black students. Way back in 1873, USC has its first black student enroll.

There is a HUGE presence of southern culture. About half of the students are from the state of South Carolina and many others are from Georgia, NC, and Tennessee. We drink our sweet tea, dress up to the nines for football games, and say y’all. That being said, USC has a huge population of students from NY, NJ, Ohio, and other northern states and USC is pretty welcoming to those students.

My NJ d (sophomore) really appreciates and enjoys the southern culture that is present and loves having a roommate from South Carolina as well. I also feel that the presence of southern culture is a positive!! I love visiting my d any chance I can get and thoroughly enjoyed my second Parent Weekend last weekend. D has friends from all over the place. Many are from the South, but she also has a ton from up and down the east coast as well as a few from the midwest. No complaints on our end.

I am from Pennsylvania and am a freshman at USC. My roommate is from Ohio and at least 50% of my floor is from New Jersey/Pennsylvania/Maryland or New York. There are a TON of northerners here. The Southerners don’t really hate the “yankees” though it could hurt you when rushing for fraternities but that’s really it. I haven’t met anyone who is truly racist. I mean people all over make racial jokes but are not really serious. As for Southern culture, it is evident in Sweet tea, mac and cheese and fried chicken in the dining halls as well as dressing up for football. Other than that i don’t really see huge Southern culture. I think it’s because there are so many northerners. I would say at least 30% from northern Virginia and north. The northern culture seems to make the Southern culture less evident. I particularly don’t like that, as i left the north for a reason. I am thinking about transferring to another school maybe Auburn or Ole Miss, or somewhere more Southern.
