USD vs. NYU

I have been in such a debate over whether I should attend NYU or USD this fall 2011. When I weigh the pros and cons for each of the schools, their lists come out about equal.

NYU:
Pros: its ranked pretty high, I was accepted for Music Business (dream major :) ), lots of internship opportunities, new experience, $17,000 scholarship

Cons: never been to NYC before, lack of community, people are judgmental (so I've heard), lost in the city, crime?

USD:
Pros: Catholic, beautiful campus, people seem nice, closer to home, $13,500 scholarship

Cons: Just as expensive as NYU, not as well ranked, people say employers aren't partial to USD

If anyone could please help me settle this debate I would be very appreciate! I have to make my admission decision by May 1st!

Thank you :)

I would say how important is the weather for you? And is SD far enough away from home that you’ll still be on your own? NY is pretty awesome but I didn’t love the hustle of the big city enough to live there.

USD probably about 120 miles away from where I currently live, so I would say it’s not too close to home. Weather plays a small factor in my decision as well. Typically, I have not experienced temperatures much lower than the high 20’s.

I rely on the sunshine a lot, not sure if it matters to you! Good luck!

I’d take the East Coast and a better school over the West Coast and USD any day. No, people aren’t as “nice” in NYC, but once you get used to being able to curse out a granny flipping you off out her car window, you’ll wonder how you could have lived anywhere else. It’s not even that people aren’t “nice” as much as they’re not fake. If someone has a problem with you, you’ll hear about it. No one smiles to your face and talks s*** behind your back.

And no one tries to talk to you on the street/ train unless they’re begging, which is pretty nice-- it’s considered rude to talk to strangers. I really hate people just coming up to me to talk on the street here in SD as if I’m not going somewhere. It’s very annoying.

Great night life, too, by which I don’t mean just bars like in San Diego. I mean s*** to do-- concerts, comedy clubs, playhouses, jazz and blues bars, dance clubs.

Wicked good Chinese food, too. You have not had Chinese food until you’ve had it in the Northeast. And you can get it delivered at 4am in NYC.

Damn, I really miss the East Coast!
