USD is said to have a good business program. But I’d prefer SCU as a school, they have smaller faculty-student ratio. USD is solid too, they have perfect weather, right next to the beach. Both campuses have a summer resort-like feel, but USD campus is more widely acknowledged. USD dorms are pretty good too I heard, and they have apartments for upperclassmen which are awesome. I haven’t done my research on SCU dorms but they should be solid too. Besides that SCU is one of the upcoming colleges around. USD doesn’t have much name value, I heard students say, from job interviews that when they say they’re from USD, the interviewer thinks the students from UC San Diego or San Diego State.

I know a little bit about each school, but am certainly NO expert. Older daughter attends USD, second year, but is a Communications major, not business. We live near SCU. Younger daughter has been accepted at both USD and SCU, for business. So these are just my simple, non expert observations.

USD is one of the most beautiful campuses I have ever seen. In fact it is rated top 10 in the COUNTRY by US News and World Report (I think, or is it Princeton Review?). It looks like a country club. San Diego is a great city.

USD is a newer school - just started in the 1940s, and I don’t think became very popular until the 1980s, so therefore does not have as long standing a reputation as many schools, or as SCU. I believe they are working very hard there to constantly upgrade the academics at that school. A new science building was built a few years ago (though I am not sure if the science dept is that strong). A brand new Student Union Center, cafeteria building, was just built, which is gorgeous!!! and just opened this fall '09. They hired a new Dean of the Business College from Dartmouth who started Fall '08. I really get the feeling that this school is moving up very rapidly in academics, reputation, prestige. In fact, one report (US NEWS?) last year, I think, had USD on its “Up and Coming Schools” section. I do believe this is true.

Academically, I believe that SCU is a notch above USD. But, I live in this area, where there are lots of alums and lots of hiring from Silicon Valley from SCU, so my view could be tainted. But, I have the impression that SCU Business and Engineering program are very highly regarded in all of California, and its reputation is really growing nation wide.

Academics - I would say SCU wins, but both are good, and you need to look at the whole package

City - USD wins (beach and San Diego, weather, how can you beat that?) as Santa Clara is not much of a city, though there are things to do in San Jose, and tons of things to do in a 2-3 hours radius (San Francisco, Carmel, Yosemite, lakes, Napa, Big Sur, Beaches). One thing I have noticed in general with city schools, as the city sometimes takes AWAY from the campus. Because there is so much to do in and around the city, there is not a lot happening on campus. If there is not much of a city, then more happens on campus. USD is a pretty quiet campus socially, things tend to happen more off campus there. At SCU, things happen on campus and it is more low key and campus orientated than USD. Lots of houses off campus where kids party and hang out and walk back and forth to campus.

There is also a very different vibe in Northern CA than Southern CA.

The dorms, food and cafeteria at USD are great. Probably a notch better than SCU, but do you really make your decision based on those factors?

There are lots of nuances to each school, and what is important to you. Younger daughter does not care for USD, but is seriously considering SCU Business.

I just looked up undergrad business schools on the Business Week website - SCU got straight As!!! some very interesting info…

[The Top Undergraduate Business Programs - BusinessWeek](http://bwnt.businessweek.com/interactive_reports/undergrad_bschool_2009/?chan=magazine+channel_special+report)

So where did your younger daughter end up going to college? I am looking at both schools as well and want to know the diffence in the N Cali vs S Cali vibe that you mention. We are from the east coast.

@ masondixonline, Northern California and Southern California have a totally different vibe. I currently live in NorCal but i am considering going to school in Southern California. NorCal is known attract more of the “hippie”, outdoorsy types. It is defiantly more liberal in its views. In general, SoCal is known to be more materialistic. It probably attracts more hollywood glam type people. It is more conservative and a lot more crowded. It is also a lot warmer in Southern California. Both are great, just depends on your personality.
