I am planning to major in mechanical engineering, and I wanted to know some useful minors that could help me in the field of mechanical engineering.

A computer science minor would never hurt.

I originally planned on a minor in both physics and math. Recently I changed my mind and decided to minor in EE and perhaps CS. (EE because I hope to get my MS in EE after my BS in ME)

A Technical Communications minor or concentration is helpful with any kind of engineering degree.

IMHO minors are just a title. As a title, it has no bearing on on my decision to hire someone or not. You can take classes in a subject without getting a “minor” in that field.

What matters is what courses you took, what grades you got in those courses and, most importantly, how well you work in a team environment.

If it is easier to get into certain classes by designating a minor in that area, then do so.

I agree that’s its more or less just a title. I guess you really should ask yourself why you want a minor.

Some people minor in something just because they’re interested in it. Like I said, I’m minoring in EE because I plan on going to grad school for EE and I need the background. So, some people do it for grad school.

I’m minoring in CS for two reasons: 1. Because I think it might be fun and interesting and 2. Because its possible that I’ll learn a valuable skill to take with me given that I put my effort into it. After all, I enjoy both EE and ME and software is included into mechatronics.
