useful websites

Hey people,

I thought I'd throw some useful websites out to you all that maybe you'd want to visit, I know when I was considering McGill I deffinately wanted to know about certain things that wern't covered by the admissions staff.

Montreal (What to do, what's hot etc.)

www.madeinmtl.com (this website is really cool- it's interactive and nicely laid out. Lists some pretty cool places in Montreal, and has this itinerary feature where you can choose a theme and it will make up a day for you of things in Montreal to visit! It's got lots of pictures, and even videos.)

www.tourisme-montreal.org (the official tourism site for montreal, its got lots of stuff about montreal.)

Student Life @ McGill

Student's Society of McGill University
www.ssmu.ca (This website is currently going under long needed renovations, and since the new executive is about to take over it will probably change a lot over the summer. This site is where you'll go for Frosh info, and also to know whats going on with SSMU- the undergraduate student government.)

McGill Daily
www.mcgilldaily.com (Student Independent Newspaper- when I was looking into colleges I actually read their student newspapers to get a feel of the campus vibe and student population...)

McGill Tribune
www.mcgilltribune.com (Student Society's Official Newspaper)

McGill Underground
www.mcgillunderground.com (This website is new this year- its run by students and it basically gives a web forum for things like course reviews, which is still in the construction phases, and independent student initiative announcements.- also is used for a lot of montreal's amazing music scene.)

Party MG
www.partymg.com (This website basically announces Nightlife and Student Parties for McGill students.)

If you're an artist and you're interested in knowing about the Montreal artistic scene- or McGill's, ask me.
If you want to know anything about any of the clubs on campus, or student organizations- ask me. I'm on the Student Society Legislative Council, and I am on the Executive of several clubs here- and know a lot about pretty much everything else. So do ask, hope you all choose McGill- and deffinately check out those websites to maybe entice you more to Montreal! Ciao

I'd really like to know how hard or easy it is to get really get involved in clubs, especially in more executive-like positions. Do a lot of freshmans get to take larger roles in clubs or student governments? How hard is it to get a club started? What are some interesting clubs I could look out for next year? Any kind of insider information on what the extracurriculars is like would be great.

Its all about initiative.
I'm just finishing my freshmen year. Next fall I'll be sitting on the Legislative council of SSMU (which is the Student Government here). I also sit on the Executive Committee of MUSA (Music Undergraduate Student's Association), and the McGill Savoy Society (www.savoy.ca). I'm a member of the a-cappella group "Tonal Ecstasy" and serve as their treasurer. Next fall I'll be directing the Tony Award Winning drama: Equus by Peter Shaffer here at McGill's Player's Theatre. I'm active also in Queer McGill, and the American Democrats Abroad- which was quite active this past year with the Election.
Basically I got extremely involved my first year, volunteered, attended meetings, made connections- I can't emphasize enough how important it is to get involved. Attend Activities Night, over 200 clubs represented there, and you just sign up for their listserv and they'll contact you about getting involved. There are tons of clubs and organizations, so something for everyone!

is there an election that has to take place for the student government? are those positions for a particular school year filled at the beginning of the year or at the end of the previous year? does Mcgill have a yearbook? it doesn't appear as if yearbooks are very big in university.

most schools don't have a yearbook
but mcgill does have one- its called OLD MCGILL

regarding student politics on campus and positions etc... most things are by election- some positions will be open in the fall... for instance I know McMUN (mcgill model united nations) keeps two spaces on its secreteriat open for first years to run for- and the FYCC (first year council) will have elections in the fall- as will each Rez to elect a Rez council as well as an Inter-Rez Council- all of which are mostly first years.
