Usefulness of Speaking Multiple Languages?

Hello People!

I was wondering how useful is the ability to speak multiple languages in a medical career? Feel free to expand and go into detail on which field and location are most beneficial to this.

I am fluent in English (obviously), Hindi, and Punjabi. I am proficient in Spanish. I have studied Spanish for the past four years. I absolutely love learning the language. Right now I'm debating on whether to take Spanish courses in college in hopes of becoming fluent in it.

I start college in January, so until then I am thinking of going to a Spanish speaking country for 6-8 weeks to elevate my Spanish skills. Also let me know your suggestions on what is the ideal (inexpensive, safe, satisfying) country to do this.

Looking forward to reading the responses! :)

Having fluent speaking skills in a foreign language is always a useful thing for a physician to have. However, foreign language fluency really won’t make any impact on your chances for med school admission.

Hindi and Punjabi are only useful if the local population of your hospital has a significant population that speak those languages.

Spanish is useful in major urban areas, plus California and the Southwest.
