It may just be me but it seems that more people are now using their real name as their CC name. Is there a way to adjust the CC sign-up process (or even the wording used) to make people aware or make it more obvious that they should create a CC user name that is distinct from their actual name?
It’s not just you. People can sign up using social media accounts that use their real names.
I believe @CC_Jon is working on it and tracking how many new users this is impacting.
Thanks. I didn’t know that. Hopefully @CC_Jon can find a way to keep the sign up process streamlined but still require (or at least encourage) people to create a distinct CC name.
The easiest solution is not to allow signups via Facebook accounts etc.
This real name thing is an issue when folks sign on via FB and I think Instagram. Their real name is the default. This has been mentioned a LOT to the admins. Really needs to be changed to prompt the new user to chose a unique username…not their real name. The default should end.
I had this issue, didn’t realize it was going to post my real name and couldn’t figure out how to change it. I ended up creating a new account. Would be helpful if users knew that.
For anyone reading…here is how to change your username.
Yeah, I was just going to create a thread asking this same question. The current system seems borderline unethical to me, especially when kids come on here and inadvertently doxx themselves with details like location, grades, medical problems, family income…
I agree, this is increasingly a problem. It’s Confidential for a good reason. In fact, CC users are taking it upon themselves to tell the poster how to change their name. While that’s helpful in a way unrelated to the question, it detracts from the purpose of the thread.
@CC_Jon and @CC_Sorin isn’t it possible to notify the user as soon as they access their new CC account that they should consider changing their user name immediately, if they haven’t already done so?
Or maybe not allow a signup to be complete until they choose a CC name?
I think they should be prompted to choose a screen name that is not their real name when they sign up. They shouldn’t have to change it after. There have been users who created accounts a while ago, and then recently posted. They had no idea they could or should change their screen names.
When I see a poster with what looks like a real name, I usually put the directions in the thread. It’s just one post.
Great idea
@CC_Jon, let’s talk about what we can do and improve the FB login. I am wondering though if the issue is indeed the FB login or the fact that users purposely chose these usernames. I am not seeing an increase in requests to change usernames and not a lot of those that are tagged and encouraged to do that follow up.
It’s the FB (and google) login. I tried it myself, although did not complete the process
Senior members are posting the details on how to change user names when they see real names being used so you may not be seeing the request unless the new user runs into trouble or they’ve waited too long.
@CC_Sorin its that the default when setting up an account through FB or Google is one’s real name. That shouldn’t be the case for a site that is “confidential”.
What should be done? In my opinion, the default should not be the real name if the user. New users should be prompted to choose a unique screen name that is not personally identifying. This should happen before their membership in CC is finalized.
I completely agree. I especially feel we have a responsibility to protect our young (student) posters.
That makes sense. We’ll discuss internally to see how we can change the FB/Google login to not automatically pull the user’s name and profile pic.
I would like to change my user name. How can I do this I am out of the 60 day window
Just send me a private message with the desired new username and I’ll make the change.
