Uses for leftover grant money?

I'm going to be attending Cal State Northridge next semester, and I was fortunate enough to have received more than the cost of tuition in grants (Federal Pell Grant, and State University Grant). What I was wondering is how the extra money is put to use. Would I be able to use it to buy anything, or just to buy things on campus? Also, in what form would I receive the extra money? Thanks for the help.

You grants will be reduced to cover the cost of attendance. If the COA is $20,000, and your tuition and all fees are $14,000, then you would receive $6,000 back for “living expenses”. This will be in the form of cash basically. Use it as you wish.

But remember that any grant or scholarship money above the amount of qualified tuition and fees may be taxable to you. So set some aside for that.

You may not get your check in time to buy books. Often these checks are sent a few weeks after school starts.
