USF Honors College 7 year Program

Hello everybody,
I have read about USF's medical program, and it seems compelling to at least apply, but I worry that if I go there it may not be worth my time. Does anybody know if the course outline they provide is rigid (or can I take electives/pursue a minor?) Also, is it guaranteed that if you satisfy their predetermined requirements you will matriculate to the medical school?

I can help you to some extent. I have been accepted with a load of scholarship money for the USF Honors College 7-year program. It is the best safety bet for me. I know few of my friends who are in the program already. It is very simple program with no gimmicks. You maintain a 3.7 GPA and score 30 in MCAT - you matriculate into MD program. No bells and whistles. It is also a non-binding program. If you maintain 3.9+ GPA in Honors school and score over 38 in MCAT and do some great science research, then you can start looking at top 20 med schools with a good possibility of merit scholarships. IMHO, the USF med program is better than FSU in terms of residency match. Look at the average GPA and MCAT score for USF. It is little higher than FSU.

I have applied for various other programs and waiting for offer letters. At the end of the day, I will add the total cost of undergrad education along with med school cost. Then I prepare a spreadsheet and select the program which offers me the best bang for the buck. Good luck.

So, will you/have your friends taken classes outside of their predetermined curriculum? I want to be a spanish major/minor and take some generally fun and exciting college classes. Do they give you that opportunity or do you have to take exactly what is specified?

it’s not quite that simple…

mangofan:
Do you mean that not all of the students who fulfill the requirements matriculate? Please elaborate, because I’ve read all of USF’s information on their website and this statistic has not been mentioned.

USF’s 7 year program is appropriate for those who are fully committed & focused. Undergraduates need to major in Biomedical Sciences & meet all the (including liberal arts) requirements. The requirements, though not stringent, are still challenging (GPA 3.7 or better, 30 MCAT - each section > or = 8). Usually 200 entering freshmen are reported to be admitted to the program, but only 50 continue on the same path after their first year. For those who are NMF, USF offers very good scholarships.
