Hey guys, I'm looking into both USF Honors and UF for fall 12'. I've already gotten my acceptance for USF honors and I have applied for scholarship aid as well.

My major is going to be Biomedical Sciences (Pre-med) and I'm really looking forward to some research exp. with some professors, maybe even study abroad.

I've heard great things from both, so please let me hear your opinions!

USF’s Honors College is an excellent platform for undergraduate research opportunities, international travel and studies, and for preparing for medical college.

USF has many exciting, progressive projects just finished or underway now that match up with your Biomedical Sciences interest. The recently opened seven story Interdisciplinary Science and Research Building is state of the art and allows the synergenic blending of chemistry, biology, and physics studies under one roof. USF is committed to international studies and travel for its students evidenced by USF president Judy Genshaft and her husband recently donating $1 million for scholarhips for international travel for USF students. USF considers travel abroad an essential part of a college education today. USF’s established medical college is even ready to build a new medical college building after receiving a major donation from a generous USF supporter recently–USF president Genshaft has stated construction could begin as early as one year from now.

USF has the tools in place for you; adding your commitment and hard work is a winning formula for success.

WHATEVER-
When it comes down to maximizing your chances at admissions into medical school, just plainly put, an applicant graduating from UF will without question have a greater chance at admissions than an applicant graduating from USF. Thats just the way it is when comparing a tier 1 school to a tier 3 school.

All the “links of fact” is nothing more than
propaganda from USF in a futile attempt to
compare themselves to a top tier school.

^ Agree with both, kind of. Both are very, very good schools. And honestly, their medical programs are on equal level. The difference is UF does have more prestige, as daviddj said. If you do the UF medical program, you will have that added bonus of reputation. If this matters to you, then attend UF. If you’d rather be an honors student with more scholarship money, then go to USF. I’m torn between the same problem. I also was accepted to USF with Honors, and I want to do Pre-Med. But I want to go to UF. I’ve weighed it, and honestly, I love Gainesville more, and I want to travel farther from home (I LIVE in Tampa, USF is a hop, skip, and jump away). Moreover, that reputation does appeal to me. But my mother attended USF, and is a nurse, so she knows this stuff first hand. And they have equal medical programs.

Doing an Honors program as an undergrad will help you be more competitive for med school b/c you can get better research exp and stuff like that… so, okay, you can be an Honors student at USF, or a regular student at UF… I would pick Honors at USF, and then you can apply to UF’s med school, and USF’s, and wherever you feel like applying! but you will prolly get more expereince at USF Honors… it’s what you make of it though.

“Please don’t post frivolous meaningless inaccurate post !
USF is NOT equal to UF !”

Haha, WHOA. Now you’re just being offensive. I mean, really, really rude. I NEVER called you out on citing your sources. And by the way, I also never said that USF was equal to UF as a whole. I said that their medical programs were on par with each other. I’d also like to point out, that when I first saw your posts, I respected you. However, more and more I’ve seen that you’re a rude person. Your posts are often biased, belligerent and inflammatory when they do not need to be. I, and other people, have lost all respect for you and your opinions. Also, check out this information. While the University of Florida has a higher ranking in terms of research, it is not even listed in the primary care rankings. The University of South Florida is listed in both, suggesting that in some aspects it may even be better than the University of Florida, as I’m sure primary care is more urgent to an ill patient than research. Now please, do us all a favour and grow up. Stop insulting people and their opinions for no reason.

don’t listen to any of these people…i go to a private research uni up north (on this forum for my brother’s app) and I would honestly choose USF honors. you have no idea the significance of a lower student-teacher ratio: it could help you get really good recommendations for med school, it could help you get research with professors, could help you TA classes that otherwise would be impossible because there are so many kids. granted UF is ranked higher, but I guarentee you when it comes down to similar stats from a state public school, med schools will look at your extra-cirricular, and an honors college will help you achieve that.

And besides, USF has a nice 7 year medical program that is easier to get into. A year off grad studies cuts a year off your debts and lets you start making money faster.

Thanks alot for everyone’s help and advice, you guys rock! I’ll definitely consider what everyone has said before I make up my mind around mid-Feb.

Well I’m going to say it, USF is more than equal to UF, and in fact “daviddj” serves as an example of how USF might even be SUPERIOR to UF, in addition to other reasons. When it comes to medicine, USF is THE outstanding school to consider in the State of Florida, even when you compare it with UF, a school that is more than twice the age of USF.

All of the “prestige” associated with UF is due mainly in part to subjective ignorance arisen from the age of the school. USF is, as I’ve said, younger, but more vibrant and locally involved, proving the practicality of our programs.

Bottom line, pick the school that has the better program for what you want to do, which in this case is USF. UF might have a better overall ranking as a school, but when it comes to medicine and health, USF is the premiere school to consider in the State of Florida.

Something I want to mention, as it helped me when making my college decision:

This past weekend I attended the Scholars Showcase at USF, it’s targeted directly at honors college students and those who may find a home in one of the college’s accelerated programs.

At the dinner, a speaker noted one thing about the difference between the bigger, older universities, and attending USF as an honors student. They said that when you attend those older, more prestigious universities, that you’ll be “invisible”.

That really stuck out in my mind, because the difference to me seemed that I could either be an average student at an older university, or I can be one of the few in an honors college, getting the tools and guidance that many college students only hope for.

People are confusing some issues here. It is not the ‘ranking’ of the research but the opportunities that will be afforded to you. It sounds like USF has the edge here as well. Also, the poster above who mentioned that smaller class sizes will come to benefit you in securing recs for med school makes an excellent point.

These two factors make USF a more attractive option. However, getting into med school is EXTREMELY difficult. You will need to stand out and be spectacular regardless of which school you attend. Also, you need to consider your preferences. If you are looking for a traditional college experience you won’t be able to beat four years in Gainesville. It depends on what you want out of your college experience.

BTW, the above poster who suggested that getting into the 7-year program is somehow easier is clearly not familiar with that program or any other of its kind. These programs are very competitive at every university that offers them.
