USF vs U of F

I've essentially ruled out going out of state because it's cheaper to stay here. I'm a CC transfer student looking for the fall 2007. Chances are I'll end up at U of Florida but I was looking at USF also. I know USF does not have the reputation U of F has. USF does have a two year honors program, and a post bachelors program (interests me because I'm a history major looking to go to med school). U of F is more of a "recognized" name and is a better institution in some regards. I like the environment at U of F a little better but it's not a huge difference for me. Do you think that attending USF and enrolling in the honors program being able to take the post bachelor's program -VS- attending U of F no honors and pursuing pre-med requisites on my own: which is going to look better if either would at all. Does this not matter all that much and I am just over analyzing this whole thing way too much. I know what the feeling is about USF from people here it's a school that is too big and not really that great (personally I think that view is skewed), people don't necessarily think U of F is Harvard but it is looked at as being a better school than USF. I would only be applying to med schools in Florida also. I'd really appreciate any advice or comments. Thanks so much.

No matter what anyone else tells you here, USF and UF are both GREAT schools. While UF is significantly better, USF is a very up and coming school. It'll be a known name in a few years. Either way, cant go wrong. I'm a bit biased towards UF since my dad went to law school there :P

It's not even a comparison. (Tier 1 vs Tier 4)

That's what I'm thinking SSobick I just wanted to know if there was anything I was over looking. Maybe I'm missing something and either would be an equal or decent choice. Anybody else?

I got my Masters degree at USF in chemistry in 1999. I really think that the school is a snoozer and I also think that US news is overlooking a lot by not ranking it higher. I firmly believe that if you are going to med school, especially in Florida, either school will be fine. Both schools have a med school. Having said that, I am chosing to do my MBA at Gainesville because it is a better school. I think that the previous poster is absolutely correct, in 5-10 years, USF will be close to a T-1 school. The amount of resourses being pumped into the school is mind blowing and it is already a research 1 University-a pretty elite status. Honestly, I think US news got it wrong on this one.

USF potentially could have beat Florida in football last year. Something to think about. And Tampa is a lot better than Gainesville.

...bump...

Gainesville may not be the greatest city, however the social scene at UF is one of the best in the nation.

It's a plus that it's social but it's by far my main concern. Essentially I wanted to know if attending U of Florida without honors and without a post-baccalaureate program is going to set me back any. I could attend USF and be in the honors program and they have a post-baccalaureate program. U of Florida is recognized as the better school over USF, any more thoughts?

...bump...

UF has outstanding connections, the alumni network in Florida is very strong. I was able to get a highly pretigious internship from a fellow Gator. Also you have to understand that USF is just a commuter school, and is probably never going to progress into a world class university.

Steering Council Prepares for 1.25 billion Capital Campaign

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida’s Campaign Steering Council has been named to prepare for a major fundraising campaign that will help the university become one of the nation’s premier institutions of higher learning, university President Bernie Machen announced.

The nine-member council serves as a primary leadership body and participates in planning and policymaking for the campaign.

“These are people with long documented support of the University of Florida and who are also key figures in their communities. They will lead the charge for the campaign, and both encourage and motivate others to become involved,” Machen said.

Jacksonville banking executive Beth McCague and Coral Gables businessman Earl Powell are council co-chairs. McCague is managing director of wealth management for Wachovia-Jacksonville. Powell is chairman, CEO and co-founder of Trivest Partners. Other members are Jerry Davis of Jacksonville, Gary Gerson of Miami, Allen Lastinger of St. Augustine, Joan Ruffier of Orlando, Jon and Beverly Thompson of Sanibel, and Ward Wagner of Palm Beach. It’s anticipated that other volunteers will be added to the steering council as the campaign progresses.

The council will meet two or three times each year throughout the campaign, which is expected to run through 2012.

This is the University of Florida’s third capital campaign in its 153-year history. The previous campaign, which concluded in 2000, raised more than $850 million in support of the university’s threefold mission of education, research and service. The purpose of the new campaign is to provide funding for the programs and initiatives that will help the University of Florida achieve its potential as one of the top universities in the world
