S22 was accepted and is super excited! Presidential scholarship of $22k. His stats are in an earlier post here.
He loves the vibe from all the online videos and zooms we’ve seen. But we are from the rural mountain west so not that familiar with SF the city or the school. As a local, can you fill us in more about what the pros and cons to the school are? Why you still consider it a good option for your kids even though they probably hope to go farther away from home?
Some pros
- Benefits of Jesuit education. Builds character and focuses on social causes.
- Vision to make the world a better place.
- Small class sizes 20:1
- Easier to get classes compared to UC’s
- Vibrant city with lot of internship opportunities.
- Great location and in a safer SF location ( Richmond area)
- Very diverse student body which enriches the learning experience
Cons
- High fees even after aid
- Not a well known college outside area.
- May not have the resources of a large university especially for science majors
4 off campus housing is expensive
Hope this helps
Definitely come spend some time in San Francisco. It’s not for everyone that’s for sure (from the politics to the general vibe of the city). You’d want to be sure that your daughter is comfortable being in a very urban environment that often includes crime and very high prices. Off campus housing is notoriously expensive. But as one other person said, this is in one of the more residential and nicer areas of the city.
Local Bay Area employers value USF students. Can’t comment outside of the area. But your daughter will have access to great internships and many industries especially if she happens to be interested in health care or tech. Good luck deciding !
To put a number on the ‘expensive rent’ conversation: when my S attended (he graduated in 2019) his friends who lived off-but-near campus paid about $750/mo. (typically their share of a two-bedroom apartment that was $1500/mo total). Rents supposedly decreased during the pandemic but I don’t know where they stand now.
USF just opened a new 600-person dorm so that’s providing a lot more on-campus housing for sophomores.
Thanks @HumbleTeen, @Oak510 and @oneofthosemoms. S22 is excited about going to college in a big city though he doesn’t have any city smarts yet. Hopefully he’ll have some good roommates who will advise him in the early days! He’s planning to major in Asian Studies and possibly minor in film. Not sure what you do with that kind of degree, but sounds like there are plenty of opportunities in the area!
