USGS/REU Internships - Experiences?

I'm planning for next summer and want to get on track for an internship with USGS or an REU research project.

I'm currently studying geophysics and have a lot of upper div work under my belt along with some research with a professor.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Son did REU this past summer. He has a 3.9+ GPA and had strong recommendations from professors in the toughest courses. You may want to ask around in your department for suggestions on programs that they know about. The announcements usually start getting circulated during the spring semester.

Have you searched the REU site?

Our student did a Physics REU in between Soph and Jr year summer. It was great and provided plenty of info/experience w/regard to grad school, etc.
