I'm getting ready to purchase a laptop for freshman year and I was wondering which product lines produce the best laptops? Also, how often will I be using my laptop in classes? Do I carry it to all my classes every day?

I suggest buying a Mac.

Yes, it is going to be more expensive, but I have never seen anybody who bought one and was disappointed.

depends on the class, most likely answer is no.

some people like to bring laptop with them everywhere they go though

buy a lightweight if possible, no one likes carrying around a desktop replacement

They are really portable and well worth it if you dont need a high-end laptop.

Nobody’s going to admit to buying a piece of junk. Apple doesn’t even sell laptops that do only what the average college student uses them for (i.e. word processing, making presentations and surfing the internet).

Hmmm … I have been shopping around a bit as my D is going to be a freshman at UF in the Fall. I used to own Gateways and now I own Dells. However, recently began looking at three brands primarily. I am focusing on the HP, the Toshiba and the Apple. I must say the Apple of today (I was not an apple fan years ago) is pretty impressive. She has an iPhone and really likes how it works. It seems the Apple computers operate a bit like the iPhone. We will be taking a trip to the Mac store to see the models, I am leaning towards the 13.3 inch apple.

Can’t really help you with what kind of laptop to get, but I can answer to the how often you’ll bring it to class thing. You can bring it as much or as little as you want. It really depends on the class (some professors won’t allow laptops, some will, some make you sit in a certain corner of the room, etc.) and your preferred method of note-taking (I’ve found that I retain a lot more and pay a lot more attention if I take notes by hand).
