Hi all,
So I have a question: in one of my teachers' recommendation letters for me, he mentions this story that I wrote that was published in a literary magazine at school, and about how I wrote about an experience I had with nature and the stars, etc.

I recently wrote a college essay about this same experience, talking about the stars and whatnot. Would it be bad to send this college essay to various schools, knowing that my teacher talked about it in his rec letter?

It's definitely not the same essay, but the same topic and about the same experience. I just don't want the adcom to think that I copy and pasted it.

My personal opinion is to choose another topic. Use the college essay for admissions to know as much about you as possible. Snce your teacher mentioned it in his recommendation, definitely write about a different experience. Writing about the same thing might hurt your chance of admissions, especially to selective colleges.

I 100% agree with CoachJen. The essays are your last chance to personally tell the adcom who you really are and what makes you so special. And yes, everyone of you is very special, regardless of your GPA/SAT. Bring that special person - YOU, out in your essays!

Well, I mean, he mentions it in passing briefly. Such as he goes “From her discussion of the prominence of stars in her personal narrative which as published in a literary magazine, to her avid class discussion.” like he doesn’t detail it or anything.
