Is using abbreviations a bad idea?

For example, NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing would be pretty long if I spelled out NCTE. Should I spell out NCTE anyway?

Thanks for any help.

Same question

You are forced to use abbreviations in the activities section because space is so limited. Do everything you can to get the point across. Shortening, abbreviating, etc. are all fine. Use preview to be sure that what you’ve entered will actually be viewed by your schools. When you do that, you might learn that you have even less space than you think.

^Yeah they really do not give you much room

I had to use some abbreviations because of space limitations as well (even simple things like with -> w/ helped me). I would say just say NCTE. I don’t know what that is, and maybe somebody on the adcom might not know. But guess what? Google. :)

But wouldnt that make the job cumbersome for the adcoms?Im an Int’l student and I have a different problem.Even if I do use abbraviations, its not like the commitee is going to recongnise them right?Should I send a resume instead?(Although Im being advised against sending one).Sorry for barging in on your thread like that Luminouzz but I thought it concerned the same topic…in a way…

Most adcoms will know what the abbreviations mean, but if you are an international student, you might want to consider describing the more obscure things in the Additional information section

Some schools have an adcom assigned to international recruiting and that person will most likely read your app. He or she might well be more familiar with your activities than you realize. You might even try to contact those people directly and ask a few key questions by email to get yourself noticed early in the process. Overall, I agree that providing more detail in the Additional Information section when necessary is absolutely the way to go.

Thanks a lot for your advice jgraider and niceday!I think I shall do that. What about the idea of a resume?

Abbreviate if it is well known.
