I have an iPad and am wondering if it would be practical to use at a UC?

I'm transferring this fall but don't know if I want to take the extra baggage of an iPad. It's a great device to mess around with; games, movies, etc. .

But i've taken the iPad to class at my CCC before and it wasn't really the power house that a laptop is. I'm simply wondering if students at UC's are now implementing the use of iPad's.

Personally, I see potential advantage with an iPad at a UC being in the possibility of loading up all heavy textbooks in iPad compatible files.

I guess in other words, at UCLA, will I be seeing a classroom filled with laptops...or iPad's? Ya know?

unless you plan on taking notes on your ipad with the wireless keyboard, you’ll mostly see laptops in the classroom. i have an ipad myself, but the ipad isn’t meant to replace a laptop. i use my ipad while lounging around, just web browsing or playing little games, but i do all my schoolwork on a laptop.

i usually write in the book/highlight, so i need a physical book. the only book i’ve ever brought to class was my statistics book.

why would you care? use your ipad if you like it better than your laptop. i doubt people will honestly care if you use a tablet or a laptop. Maybe you should just use the old paper and pen if it’s bothering you that much.

I just got the iPad 2 a month ago and I am using it right now to take notes during rehearsals and I can imagine I’d use it during lectures and I do not have a laptop anymore. I have no problem typing on the screen, but I have the wireless keyboard with me in case I need it. I guess it is all up to personal preference. Most of my friends use an actual notebook for notes, but I find it easier to type, plus I can record audio of the lecture and sync it to the notes. The iPad is a lot easier to carry than my old laptop, which is what I used to use.

I wouldn’t want to carry around both an iPad & Wireless keyboard around. I might as well carry my laptop. With my iPad, I just surf the web and play games. I bring this up because I figure having an iPad at University would just be another thing to have and carry around…unless I was super big on the iPad games and browsing…which I would be if I didn’t have a laptop. I, too would imagine using my laptop for all schoolwork and iPad for simple browsing.

I’m considering not taking the iPad to UCLA and leaving it with the folks or giving it to my grandma.

Another concern of mine was having to carry a bunch of textbooks around all day long. Hopefully it won’t get to that.

Finally, I don’t truly care whether a classroom is filled with iPads vs. laptops; I simply wanted to inquire as to whether iPads were gaining a hold at Universities to the point of being considered a serious tool in the classroom, which it obviously yet isn’t (completely)…but i’m sure will get there in a matter of years.

an iPad might be a bit more entertaining to use than a laptop, but not more practical. i could see an iPad being useful “scratch paper” for math class as it reduces paper waste and trash though. But then again the iPad is meant to be touched with fingers and isn’t really a pen-based tablet.

I use my iPad for all my textbooks, and PDF documents. Don’t expect to type notes on it very fast, but it is great for your textbooks. I have been able to find most of my textbooks in PDF format, but it does require quite a bit of hunting.

[i"I guess in other words, at UCLA, will I be seeing a classroom filled with laptops…or iPad’s? Ya know?"*

Sounds like you’ve already decided what works best for you right now, and you’re concerned you won’t fit in because of it. XD

shrug

Peer pressure sucks doesn’t it? If it won over I’d have an iPhone, an iPad, and a 15" MacBook Pro as almost everyone else I know does. OTOH, I’m trying to avoid loans like the plague. XD

Well, I initially brought this discussion up needing a new cell phone.

My internal dilemma was to either keep the iPad for school and keep my basic flip phone that doesn’t have all the keys working…or sell the iPad and get an iPhone.

I already bit the bullet and purchased an iPad today. Most likely i’ll be selling the iPad to cover the cost of the iPhone I purchased earlier today. So far I love it and the last person in the family to have an iPhone…aside from my friends as well. :)

I use an iPad at school. All of my textbooks are on the iPad, and I upload instructor-provided lecture notes to my note-taking app, and then use a stylus to annotate them during lecture.

If it’s a technical course, or no notes are provided, I just use my iPad like a notebook (with a stylus and a note-taking app).

I don’t usually type on it, but if I must, I have a case with an attached bluetooth keyboard that folds up and over like a laptop. It’s very light, it fits in my purse. I don’t carry a backpack anymore.
