Using Anual Drop

Does anybody familiar with the process of using the annual drop? How does it effect your transcript & financial aid?

here is my situation if you want to know:
This quarter, i'm taking too many classes(i think), two programming classes (one of them is honor) and some other classes + working part time. I'm thinking of dropping one of programming classes because i dont have free time to myself and i constantly worrying about my progress in those classes. For my mental sack, I'm considering dropping one of my classes.

I know a “W” will show up on your transcript, but I don’t know how it will affect financial aid

Late Course Drop Period

Each academic year (September through August) you may drop one course after the 14th calendar day of a quarter, but no later than the end of the 7th week of the quarter. Once this “annual drop” is used, no additional drops will be permitted after the 14th calendar day until the next autumn quarter. A W grade and the week designation (W3 through W7) will follow the course title on your academic transcript. You will assessed a $20 change of registration fee and tuition forfeiture. These optional drops are not cumulative.

The financial aid most likely requires completion of a certain percentage of courses. So, one drop shouldn’t affect it.

You need to check with the financial aid office - but I think as long as you have 12 credits (full time), it shouldn’t affect your FA.

One drop won’t matter in the long run if you’re applying for graduate school - at least, that’s what I’ve been told by advisors.

I had an adviser tell me that if you’re wishing to go to graduate school…
an S/NS is preferable to a W

The S at least shows your grade was OK whereas if you have a W your grade could’ve been anything…so it gives more red flags

Also, she told me if he you only take one s/ns or w it’s probally not that big of a deal as long as the rest of your grades at the university are really good, otherwise don’t.

Thanks for that input, travelgirl!

Thanks everyone for your input. I think I’m gonna use my annual drop. I’m too stress out and i cant seem to focus very well on anything right now. I’m not planning to go to grad school any time soon.

I heard that if you drop a class by a certain time, you will not receive a W on your transcript, but nothing will be there, as if you never took the class. Is that true? And if so, when is the deadline for that this quarter? Thanks.

@ilikeuw: Looks like it was Oct 7, if not earlier: [University of Washington - 2012-13 Academic Calendar](http://www.washington.edu/students/reg/1213cal.html). Either way, it’s too late now. However, that calendar might be useful for future quarters if you want to assess those options.
