How common is it for people with the qualifying AP scores to take Calc 114 and/or Honors Chem 115? Would these classes be difficult for an incoming Freshman to take their first semester? Also, my adviser just assumed that I would take Calc during my first semester but now having looked at what classes I might want to take and being limited by the College's 4 credit maximum I am wondering if it would be weird/not recommended for me to take Calc my second semester instead of my first.

I got 5's on Calc BC and Chem AP exams so I decided to take Calc 114 and Honors Chem (my adviser warned me against taking organic chem as a freshman even if I were able to pass the placement exam). Then, looking at mock schedules people had posted online that most people were taking the intro Calc 104 and Chem 101. Making me even more nervous is the fact that I took both those AP courses during my junior year. Now I am just wondering if they know something I don't.

It is perfectly fine to take Math 114…doable definitely…it is arguably harder Fall semester than Spring semester though so make sure you are comfortable with Calculus.

Orgo is doable, thats what I did freshman year, but the class kinda hits you like a freight train about halfway through fall semester because thats when you start learning real orgo instead of foundational stuff up to that point. Chem 015 is an amazing alternative that is really interesting too.

Thanks TevashSzat! You are a lifesaver! So it is not unusual for people to not take any math during their first semester and then take Calc the second semester?

I did it, but I am terrible at math so the reason I pushed it off was because I just didn’t wanna take it. Should have pushed it off indefinitely haha

I don’t know how many people skip Calc their first semester exactly, but my roommate for next academic year did it since he tested out of Math 114 and went straight to Math 240 spring semester and was fine.

I’d say that it really depends on how far you want to go into math and/or how your schedule is coming out. If you want to go in deep, I’d say just go with Math 114 fall semester, but if you are only trying to fulfill basic requirements, then feel free to only take it in the spring.

I took Math 114 freshman first semester and it was fine. My friends taking Math 104 were actually having a harder time since they have to do all the taylor series and stuff which (I personally think) is a lot harder than multivariable calc.

Hey so now that you’ve mentioned it, how much of the “taylor series stuff” and other BC material carries over to multivariable calc? I am decent at calculus in general but my BC course was not very good, and I’m worried about going into math 114 without being solid at power/taylor series, polars, etc.
Thanks!

Series don’t really come up again until 240. Polar coordinates/vector calculus are a pretty good chunk of 114, but they don’t assume a huge amount of background knowledge.
