I have heard that people who go into pre-med take the intro level courses even though they could have placed out of them, due to AP/IB level credits. I am a full IB diploma candidate, and have 4 HL exams I will be taking in May. Most schools that I know of require a 5+ to recieve credit for intro level courses. So is it a good idea to use up those credits in the intro level classes? One the pro side it saves money and time, but then again the intro-level courses are taught much differently than high school ones. Im just wondering and wanted to know what some of you who have gone into the pre-med path did.

I'm not on the path yet but I think I would have taken an intro-level course because it might be easier, thus boosting your GPA which is always good.

This is what I learned at Davis about using AP credit to get out of intro level courses. When you use AP credit to get out of intro level classes, say it gets you out of 2 quarters of intro to inorganic chem or something like that, those two quarters that you used AP credit for won't count toward Med School because it's not a course that you actually took on campus for a grade. So if you were to do that you would have to take higher level courses in that subject to fullfill the unit and year requirement for Med school. Basically any credit toward sciences don't use but for things that are not realted to med school or your major you could use. Hope that helps.

i did full IB with 3 HL courses: bio, math and history. my school requires a 6+ to give credit and i got 6s in both bio and math and got 12 credits but i still took both calc and bio. i started at calc two and though it was relatively simple since it was all stuff i'd done, there were a few things that the IB didnt cover...like taylor series and stuff like that. As for bio....first semester was an automatic A and recomendation with minimal effort....second semester however is annoying. Bottom line....its nice to have the IB credits there but noone will stop you from taking the courses again and its to ur advantage to take them, u have nothing to lose.

okay that sounds good. I think i will just take them, and have my GPA boosted.

at UCSD, they won't let me retake a class if I got AP credit for it.

So for example, (not real), I get a 4 on AP Biology...the lowest class I can begin at is, say, 2nd quarter introductory bio. So say I do that...I finish the series with two quarters of bio, out of the three required. So what would I do, go to a higher level of bio and take a quarter of it to fufill the pre-med requirement? Is that allowable?

Is it possible to submit only certain AP grades? Like, APUS instead of AP Bio, even though I took it in the same year?

First off, I'd recommend mildly against using AP credit, but it's not a big deal.

Second, if things are the same as when I was in high school six years ago, you can either submit all your AP credits or none of them; you cannot send a select few. Still, that was a long time ago...

no it's still the same, all or nothing
