Using AP scores for credit

If I get 4s on the Lit AP and Euro AP exam, can I get credit for certain classes? Would I get credit for my social science and humanities requirements? How does it work? Do I just take less classes? And do I have to use the credits freshman year?

Note: The following is assuming you are in the College of Arts and Sciences.

You can find all of the information you need regarding advanced credit here:

http://www.bu.edu/admissions/files/library/media/advanced_credit_guide.pdf

In CAS, there are two ways to fulfill your general studies requirements. There is the Core Curriculum or Divisional Studies. The differences between the two will be summarized at orientation, but most people go with Divisional Studies because you have more options and you can use AP credit.

In Divisional studies, you need to take two classes (a total of 8 credits) of each of the following categories:

Social Science
Natural Science (one class of which needs to have a lab component)
Humanities
Math/Computer Science

With scores of 4 or 5 on the English Lit and European History exams, you get 8 credits for each. Therefore, as long as you submit your scores to BU you will have fulfilled the Humanities and Social Science requirements. You still need 2 courses of Natural Sciences (at least one of which needs a lab), and 2 courses of Math/Computer Science.

No, you would not take less classes-- you would still take four classes every semester, it’s just that you’re not required to take certain classes anymore. And you choose when you want to take certain classes, too. You don’t have to take your general education requirements first. You could wait a few semesters and spread them out. For example, your first semester could consist of this:

WR100 (the first of two required writing courses… the second is WR150)
Natural Science class
Math/Computer Science class
Class relating to your major

Or it could be:

WR100
Natural Science
Other Natural Science
Class relating to your major

And so on. As long as you complete those general education classes by the time you graduate, you’re all set.

As for your last question: no, you do not have to “use” them freshman year. Once BU knows those scores, those requirements are all set, as if they never existed. So congratulations, by doing well on AP tests you’ve already secured credit for 4 college courses. Nice!

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

Just to add to cj02’s post, you can choose to decline the credit for some of your AP’s and retake the class if you wish. Probably not as much as an issue, with the Lit and Euro AP’s, but for others, like Calc, some people want to retake the class instead of jumping headfirst into the next class.

Also, for the divisional requirements, you cannot just take any class in those broad areas to satisfy the requirements. Here’s the list of classes and which area they count for [Divisional Studies Programs College of Arts & Sciences Academics | Boston University](http://www.bu.edu/academics/cas/programs/divisional-studies/)

The classes that AP Euro and Lit convert to are both on the list for 2 classes of social sciences and humanities respectively, so you will fulfill those requirements if you got 4s or 5s.

I’m sorry, I should have mentioned that I will be in Sargent doing the 6 year accelerated physical therapy program. If I get credit for those electives, why do I have to take other classes, especially since I will have 5 classes per semester because the program is accelerated? Thanks for the detailed answers!

headdesk

You can pretty much disregard the entire two above posts, then. Your best bet would either be to scavenge online for the answer or to just contact Sargent and see what the deal is.

thanks cj102. Your answer did not go in vain though, I told my friends about it. :)

Good luck with your excelerated program. I glanced over your program’s requirements. Basically, if you took those two APs the following would happen. You would successfully fill your two humanity requirements with the AP lit. However, you will not get out of writing 100 (you do not need to take WR150 in sargent). Essentially this means you start with 8 credits and two semesters you can take 4 classes instead of 5 without hurting your place in the program. Your AP Euro will only give you credits. You don’t have a social science requirement. So if you want to spend the money on taking that exam it is your choice. Keep in mind, if you do take it and get the 8 credits, you will start with 16 credits, putting you theorically a semester ahead. While this means beans to your program, come spring you will be considered a year ahead (soph as a frosh, junior as a soph, etc). Helpful for the housing lottery and spring registration.

thanks a lot potato!
