Using Co-Ops to finance Northeastern? Also Small Financial aid Question

Hey Y’all, I recently was accepted to Northeastern, one of my reaches(3.4 UW, 15 AP’s, 1450 SAT for anyone wondering)

Anyways, while I haven’t gotten my financial aid report this is likely a school that would be very expensive. As a Florida resident I was planning on attending UF, however they only admitted me for Innovation academy, a program starting in the spring for those who weren’t qualified for actual acceptance. I would also have to major in general Mathematics as opposed to my intended major of Stats/Business math. This is absolutely not something I’m interested in, and I don’t plan on
attending. Kinda off topic just thought I’d include this for context.

So after looking at a lot of estimates, I’m likely going to be paying somewhere between 30-40k PER YEAR if I want to attend Northeastern. As anyone can tell, this is a large amount of money. I was wondering if anyone could offer a little bit of guidance in reference to the supposedly Country-Best co-op programs at NEU. My intended major is Business and Mathematics and my career goal is to become an actuary. Could I use the co-op programs at NEU to offset the huge cost of attendance? Or should I consider attending UCF(central Florida) which I could most likely attend for free. This is a tough decision and I would really appreciate as much input as possible so I can make an informed decision. I’ve done my research but I’d appreciate a little bit of opinion/anecdotal evidence if you guys have any to offer.

Side note- The reason I didn’t get my financial aid offer is because I didn’t submit my Non-custodial profile. I called and NEU said I would not be penalized in any way and my Financial aid will be calculated as usual. On the CSS website I paid $25 to submit my NCP, do I have to send it to each individual school separately or will it automatically send to all the schools on my CSS profile?
Thanks a lot

If UCF is basically free for you then I would recommend that. Going deep into debt is never a good idea if you do not have to.

I will let others speak to the amount of money you make each Co-Op session.

UCF would put me maybe 20k in total debt, so compared to NEU basically free. Logically I agree with you but I just feel like I would be selling myself short at UCF, but I dont want to fuck up my future by going so deep in debt.

What you do have to keep in mind with about the co-op is that you will still need living expenses while you are on your co-op. Although you will be able to put away some money for tuition it won’t be as much as you might think. The co-op is a great experience and will help you in the job market in long run but it might not have as much of a financial impact as you would like.

There was a REALLY good thread about this a few weeks ago, I’ll see if I can dig around and link to it…

Please do it you can, would really appreciate it

A rule of thumb is that coop earnings should cover your cost of living while on coop and perhaps spending money for the next in class period. Earnings would not likely defray the cost of attendance. Wait until you receive your financial aid offer from Northeastern.

^^see above, I edited my post to include the link

@123Mom456 is correct. You would want to confirm that you can live in the dorms during co-op. I seem to recall someone saying that you needed to vacate to make room for other students not on co-op. I could be wrong. Check that out.

lol. I understand. NU is crazy expensive. I get why you would think the state school would be basically free. Haha.

You can live in the dorms while on co-op.

Students doing coop in the Boston area can live on campus.

To add something, I’m not sure how much this will help but from the AP courses I’ve taken I have at least 7, and at most 12 AP exams passed with a 4/5 (Which is NEU’s requirement for AP credit)

Could it be possible for me to graduate in only 3 years, further ofsetting the cost of attendance?

You can use AP scores of 4 or 5 to earn up to 32 credits at Northeastern. Remember that tuition is not charged during coops. While you could graduate in 3 years theoretically doing a 4 year program with an extra coop will not increase the total cost of attendance since your coop earnings will cover your living expenses while on coop.

So Tuition is not charged during Co-ops? So would that mean the estimated cost of attendance for a student participating in a co-op or multiple co-ops is an over-estimate?

I’m sorry if it seems like I’m reaching haha I just want to know the full details of what I’d be going into.

You will be charged tuition for 8 semesters spent in class. If you have 32 AP credits coming in that will be reduced to 6 semesters. That is like most any college. The number of coops taken does not increase the cost of attendance because coop earnings should cover living expenses while working on coop.

This shows sample patterns of class/coop for someone coming in with no AP credits if you click on the links towards the bottom of the page.

Don’t apologize-it’s super good that you’re asking these questions now, and it’s very mature of you. Keep asking until you get your answers and can make an informed decision.

@TomSrOfBoston how many credits would one 4 or 5 AP score earn? I’m guessing 4 credits per class?

@jillpnk https://www.northeastern.edu/admissions/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/AP-Chart-2016.2017.pdf

At least 4 credits

Good to hear @TomSrOfBoston , hopefully all of my credits will be accepted for my major, some as elective credits I suppose? not sure of AP lang or AP Enviro would give me credit for my math/business major otherwise.

Also, really appreciate it @MotherOfDragons ! Much love, thanks for the support
