Hello everyone,
So, i have an important question.
If i am only applying to one school with my Commonapp, is it a good idea, or is it OK, for me to personalize my personal statement? Will that show the school that i am applying to that i am commited to them? Because i know that the supplemental is supposed to be used for the specificity of individual schools, but since i'm only applying to one school with the commonapp, would it be a good idea to show that in my personal statement?

I hope i am making sense. if anyone has any insight regarding this, it would be greatly appreciated

Thanks so much

One other question:
Do schools value the personal statement and short answer ( on the commonapp) more than they weigh the supplemental, and more personalized response? or vice versa?
Does anyone know?
Thx

Your app should be personalized for each school no matter how many schools you’re applying to.

You can do this by making alternate versions of the CA after you send the first one.

The fact that the CA instructions say that you should submit the main essay to all schools is a bunch of hooey, your application is between you and the college. The CA is merely the middleman who relates the information, they have absolutely no say in what you submit on your app, that is dictated by the requirements of each school.

Also had the same question…bump

I know the commonapp specifically states “Note: The Common Application essay should be the same for all colleges. Members that wish to review custom essay responses will request them on their Supplement form.”, but some of my schools only provide me with a paragraph (1000 Character Limit) to talk about them. Since these schools provide little space to write about them, should I make an individual essay for each one?

I would probably talk about the school in the general commonapp essay, and the specific program in the supplement?

Please let me know what you guys think.

@ ronaldot

yea that might be a good idea… although i kind of just made my commonapp statement more broad about how i am ready to transfer and the reasons why.
I mean, just make sure your answering the question i guess?

People have been modifying the CA for years, test scores, essays, etc. to fit the demands/needs of each individual school. To not do so would be to your disservice and the CA isn’t going to give a hoot as long as you pay your fee to submit.

The citation that ronaldt is a good example of why the CAs claim that you shouldn’t change essays is so ridiculous, it does not take into account that some schools have a limited ‘Why college X?’ essay in their supplement and some have none at all. And particularly for transfers, it’s extremely important to tell the school why they are a good fit for you.

Here’s what I usually recommend:

For schools with no/limited room in the supplement: discuss all or some of the factors about the school in the main CA essay.

For schools with adequate room in the supplement: write a generic main CA essay about why you want to transfer, then address individual college aspects in the supplement.

The CA gives you the ability to make up to 10 alternate versions, you’re paying for them, so make use of them.

@entomom

is there any way i could send you my CA personal statement and my supplemental? Because i am not sure if i was too broad in my personal statement, as the supplemental only allows for 1000 characters for the place i am applying to.
I can’t private message you but if there was any other way to reach you that would eb awesome!
Thx

^I’m sorry but I don’t read essays, I spend too much time moderating on CC as it is ;).
