Hey all... I'm getting ready to write out a common application essay idea, but I want to get some advice on whether this would be okay.

I am planning to write about the first time I got heckled... at age 7. I was performing in a retirement home when one lady suddenly shouts out, in the middle of my performance... "WHAT THE HE--" Ahem "--CK!" (Except replace the CK with an LL...)

I feel like the essay could really shed some insight onto my optimism. (I kept on performing nonetheless, slightly stunned... But I kept going!) But I am wondering if it is appropriate to write the "H***" word in my essay? Especially considering it's not my own dialogue...

Everything I’ve heard and read says not to use a curse word even if you are quoting someone. So just write it the way you did here, and the admissions people will know exactly what you mean. And wow, I hope some other adult in the audience gave that rude woman a talking to!

No one gave her a rude talking to… She had dementia… But she was shuttled off as if it was the secret service carrying someone away to stuff in a black van…

Thanks for the thought.

I just want it to be concise enough that it maintains its humor, so I guess I’ll work with the wording a bit.
