Using HB pencil in SAT

Hello everyone
I want to know is using HB pencils allowed in SAT , IT says #2 pencils but as I have read in online threads that the HB pencils are called #2 pencils in US

Please seniors tell if you used HB pencil in your SAT , also has it been to you that you recieved a low score than you were expecting?

Yes HB pencil is #2 pencil.

Uhh. No I used a HB pencil too. No. 2 on the US scale is the exact same thing as “HB” on the Indian scale. So you’ll be fine using a HB pencil.

Really it does not matter what pencil you you use as long as it is dark and doesn’t smudge. HB is recommended as it best fits this requirement.

Hope that helped. :D

lead is a metal that can be detected by electrical conductivity obviously. Number 1 pencils have too soft of a lead which can end up smearing other answer choices by mistake (and very easily). Number 3 and above are hard enough that usually errors may be made in the process of detection. Number 2 combines both hard and soft metal characteristics and allows for better detection.
If you hadn’t known previously, in chemistry HB would translate to “hard” and “brittle” (meaning soft). Which is essentially the characteristics of number 2 pencil.
Hope this 1 minute lesson eased your worries lol.

@Trix19… unless i am extremely mistaken, and I am quite sure I am not, B stands for black. And what is called as lead by people is actually graphite. A pencil has graphite in it’s core.

Lead (Pb) has NEVER been used in pencils. When they first discovered graphite, they thought it was some form of lead and called it “plumbago” (Latin for “lead ore”). The black core of pencils is still referred to as lead, even though it never contained the element lead.

Also graphite is a (weak) conductor of electricity. Although I’m not sure if this has anything to do with HB pencils being recommended by CB.

IDK why we’re having a discussion about pencils lol but whatever… :P

Hey
Can we take more than 2 pencils?
The collegeboard says to bring 2 pencils for the test

Carry as much as you want, if they do not allow, leave them in your bag outside the room. make sure you do carry a sharpener though.

ok
Thank You

HB pencils are No. 2 pencils. I took 10 sharpened pencils with me. It saved a lot of time by not sharpening them between the test.
