Using Laptops at Freshman Orientation

Do students who attend the Freshman orientation use laptops frequently? I will be bringing my laptop, but I would like to get an idea of how much we actually use them. Are you notified if a laptop is required for certain meetings/scheduled events?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Assuming that transfer orientation is similar to freshmen orientation, you will only need your laptop at the end of orientation when you register for classes.

You will not be notified when to bring your laptop, just make sure you have it during the end of your orientation.

If you can, leave your laptop in your car until you register for classes because other than that, you do not need your laptop.

Thanks for the help!
Do you think it would be okay to leave it in our rooms? I have a lock, I’m just not to eager to leave it in there all day.

You’ll be fine to leave it in your room. I locked mine when I left it, but I’m a bit paranoid about stuff like that. It should be fine so long as the door’s closed (which it should be if you’re at the lectures anyway). I personally still kept it with me so I could look up class information during the boring/repetitive presentations.

lol that’s funny. During transfer orientation it was assumed the adviser would get us onto sisweb from their computer.

You can get on sisweb from a smartphone anyway :D

I’ll be bringing my lock, but I guess I’ll just have to wait and see and decide last minute!

Thanks for all the input, I appreciate it!

I am assuming the school will provide the wireless access for incoming Freshmen trying to register.

@ cahsparent: Yep, there are 3 main wifis on campus: mobilenetx, mobilenet (which is like mobilenetx, but non-encrypted) and eduroam. Most students use mobilenetx. In some buildings, though, the wifi is spotted and can take forever to connect (for example, 123 SciLec. I’ve had class in there and the professors would complain about the internet sometimes when they want to show a short video related to the course).

@sopranokitty Having just come from three days (2 and a half really) on Campus with my D, you were spot on. WiFi access was a breeze and D got her choices of classes. She is Happy and that is all I can ask for. The Parents portion of the program was well worth attending. The Parents Hosts were very good too.

Thank you for your insights.

Just a note, cahs, it is the FAMILY program, for FAMILY participants. Some students were not raised by parents/etc… We are very conscientious of how we phrase what we say during these sessions, or try to be.
