In fact I think the tone (and grammar and typos) that appear in a lot of applicants’ posts on CC would be inappropriate for inclusion on college apps…although I do not make the assumption that CC posting style=college app writing style. Can’t prove that, of course.
Good point, thanks for addressing it to me. It does not alter any opinions I have expressed here, though.
How so? It seemed to me like three pages of thoughtful advice on a Brown forum no less, and then - wham - Brown sucks, horrific teaching, supposedly top university.
You don’t find that odd?
If it’s pointed out as odd behavior and the OP thinks - gee whiz maybe that was inappropriate - maybe it’s helpful to have mentioned it. If the OP is just trying to get a rise out of us or is oblivious to why it’s odd behavior, I doubt there is much anyone here can offer that would be helpful, including help on how to navigate Brown’s course offerings.
^^^^In the words of Jeff Foxworthy - “Here’s your sign”
Perhaps - as suggested by @iwannabe_Brown - the advice given here will be helpful to others.
Harvard’s Director of Admissions Bill Fitzsimmons recently said - “Shame on us for accepting a kid who’s smart but a jerk. We want kids to make the students and teachers around them better, someone you want to be around.”
I assume/hope/trust Brown admissions lives by a similar mantra. They certainly can with 10 plus qualified RD applicants for each bed.
So now you’re calling me a jerk. Nice. I don’t know why you would say that. Because I said Brown’s math sucks? Well it does and you can find that out for yourself on the website. I’m sorry that I hurt the feelings of Brown’s math department? Don’t worry though, I’m not even appyling. Do you really think I would with 1 day left before the deadline. Lol.
On an anon forum, there’s an expression: “You are what you write.” Most of us try to be aware of times when we push the line. Sometimes, a kid comes on and drops all sorts of comments the readers react to with douts about the sincerity or the savvy. I doubt Fitzsimmons was speaking specifically of you, OP.
Know your colleges well. Try to fathom what the intense competition for an elite slot really means. And remember that they choose you, not the other way around. What you present matters. Not just stats and what you “want.”
Yeah, because I take the time to present my thoughts in a nuanced and insightful way on a frikin internet forum? And it should be just stats and what you want, but the system you have is quite stupid. Only in America…
“Will I be able to communicate in a positive way my intended use of the open curriculum…”
OP, this solicitation for input was responded to in a positive way, in keeping with your initial tone.
“Brown’s math department sucks,”
began a new phase of your approach, and the commenters here responded to it in kind, and then listened to each other and dialed it back, heeding Fenway’s intimation that there was an unfair intergenerational advantage, among other aspects.
I say this to you kindly, as you seem poised to enter the adult American world: Welcome.
