so im thinking about writing a creative play for the chicago essay? (my own prompt)
would that be too abstract?
if i don't describe myself within the play, would that be a problem?

Well, yes, I think it might be a problem.

The idea of the personal essay is to allow you to speak about and reveal yourself.

If whatever you submit doesn’t clearly refer to you then apparently it’s not a personal essay/poem/whatever.

I think it depends on what you mean by “describe myself”. If you develop a character and scenario that are representative of you, even abstractly, it could be brilliant. It’s certainly worth writing even if you do not ultimately use it–if you’ve got it in you, you should definitely give it a go and see where it takes you, IMO.
