Using Pop Culture in College Essays

Is it really acceptable??

My mom and I thought about the ways to answer various prompts, and one really stood out to me.
"Who inspires you?"

Time and time again, I keep going back to this prompt, and I can only think of one answer, and she's a fictional character from a TV show ("Veronica Mars" for the curious...)

My mom said that's not a really good answer, but in many ways, it's the only answer where I can write thoroughly and honestly.

I feel like if I answer "my mom" or "my grandpa," the essay is just another cliche story...

I think the reasons she inspires you and the characteristics you highlight are more important than who the actual person is. If you really feel that writing about her will get your personality across best then go for it! BUT make sure your essay is unique and creatively written and the reasons she inspires you aren’t superficial. Otherwise, if you just approach it with “Veronica Mars really inspires me because she’s blank, blank, and blank” or something of that nature, the essay becomes a cliche. But with all that being said, I think it’s perfectly fine to write about that prompt, since the focus, no matter what you write about, is ultimately on you and how she influenced you and not on the character herself. Ahhh, I’ve been doing work all day, so I hope that made some sort of sense. Good luck!

I LOVED VERONICA MARS! so glad someone finally understands  I think if you can manage to capture her unique Veronica-ness in your essay well enough that you do her justice, it’ll make a great paper and no one can pick you apart for it! Good luck and I’d love to read your essay once it’s done!
