using primary/alternate choice

on the common app it states that you can choose the primary/alternate choice. will this in anyway hurt my chances? (my primary is CALS and alternate is CAS). i don't get why some people choose to apply to one if you have more options.
=/

Because only a very few amount of people are even chosen to have a second look at the application, and that’s only if the primary college feels like you are an outstanding applicant for the secondary college.

Plus, you have to write multiple essays. And it’s hard to define both of your passions in separate essays if you are applying to non-similar programs.
It’s usually CAS Physics - Eng Physics, CAS CS - Eng CS, CAS Bio - CALS Bio, CAS Psych - HumEc HD, stuff like that.
