Using Stanford prof as a third rec tacky?

Son spent the summer at Stanford, came out with a 3.8 (A, A-, A-). He seems to have impressed one of his instructors, who has been very welcoming and sent email about continuing his studies from her class, inviting him to sit in on future lectures, etc. He got an A in the class.

Is it inappropriate to request the optional third recommendation from her? I think Son will use a third rec because both of his teacher recs are brand new and have been at his (also very new) school only since this year, so they don't know him well. The alternative is to have a third rec from one of the teachers who taught him the first two years and really encouraged his pushing for more challenging coursework, etc.

He's applying a year early, and the thought was that a Stanford prof rec would be a way of demonstrating that he 'fits in' and can excel there already.

It would be a very good idea to use the Stanford prof recommendation if the prof actually had personal contact with your son.

I'm doing it, too! (did research at the med school over summer)

Yup, it was a small (10 person) seminar, so it's not like it was an anonymous thing. They still exchange email, I think.

I am sure that having such recommendation can only help. If this prof is actually interested in working with our son, it can help a whole lot.
